Former Guatemalan President to plead guilty to money laundering in New York

Former President of Guatemala Alfonso Portillo has agreed to plead guilty to money laundering charges in a New York court. Portillo, president from 2000 to 2004, transferred two point five million dollars which he received from the Taiwanese government to bank accounts in Miami and Washington. Portillo read a statement in court in which he acknowledged his wrongdoing, stating that he took the money between December 1999 and August 2002. He also told the court that he was aware that in exchange for the money, he was expected to use his influence to support Taiwan diplomatically. Portillo was detained on a beach in Guatemala on January twenty-sixth, 2010, on his way to Belize. He was extradited to the United States in May 2013. As part of his agreement with prosecutors, Portillo will plead guilty, but time already served will be taken into account. The former Guatemalan president has already served more than three years behind bars. Sentencing has been scheduled for June twenty-third. The relevance to Belize is that the Portillo Administration indicated its intention to resolve the territorial dispute to Belize.
