Cop remanded for assault charges

Ronald Sutherland

Interdicted police officer, Police Constable Ronald Sutherland who was charged in October 2013 with three criminal offenses including aggravated assault with a machete, wounding and threatening words upon his ex-common-law wife, Tanisha Ortiz, found himself today on remand at the Belize Central Prison. That’s because Sutherland failed to report to the Queen Street Police Station as a condition of his bail. On October eighteen, 2013, PC Sutherland pleaded not guilty to the three criminal charges after he was accused of beating his ex-common-law wife after she alleged he pulled a machete and threatened her. Today, Sutherland who appeared in court to testify as a witness in another case, was told he could not leave because the court record shows that he has not reported even once to court.  But that is not the end of Sutherland’s woes because this afternoon, he was slapped with an additional charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon upon Freddy Amaya. For this charge, he was granted bail of three thousand dollars plus a surety of the same amount. But Sutherland is still on remand for the offences against his wife. His next court date is set for June seventeenth, when he will reappear before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith.
