Belize City man is freed of a rape charge

Vanzie Lamb

After deliberating for hours, a jury decided the fate of thirty-eight year old Vanzie Lamb, a Belize City man accused of forcibly abducting a fourteen year old primary school girl from a vehicle and raping her. When the jury emerged this afternoon, Lamb was found not guilty of rape. The alleged rape is said to have occurred in May 2009 at Lamb’s home in the Port Loyola area of Belize City. The victim, who is now nineteen and has a child, testified at the start of the trial that on the morning of May first, 2009, she was involved in an accident; her cousin was driving a vehicle which crashed and ran off the street in the King Street area. She claimed that she was then abducted by a man on a bicycle with whom she struggled even as he placed a knife on her. She identified Lamb as the abductor claiming that he dragged her to his house, tied her hands and raped her. In his defense, Lamb testified that on the day of the alleged rape, he was home all night with his mother and as an alibi witness he called his mother to testify. Today in the summing up, Judge Troadio Gonzalez referred to a report by the doctor who examined the minor the day following the incident. The doctor observed fresh bruises to her private parts and concluded that she was carnally known. But the judge then reminded the jurors that while the report was admitted to court, the doctor was not physically present to testify. He also told the jurors to bear in mind inconsistencies and discrepancies that unfolded in the trial. Justice Gonzalez warned that Lamb had no need to prove his innocence and that he subjected himself to cross examination hence his sworn testimony should be given the same weight as the victim’s. That aside, the case rested on whether or not Lamb has sexually assaulted the minor. The jury found him not guilty.
