An early reaction on Friday’s budget

John Briceño

On Friday, Prime Minister Dean Barrow will present the 2014 – 2015 Budget in the House of Representatives. Barrow has stated that it will be, in his words, a good news budget, the best ever. We know so far that the teachers will be getting a five percent increase, but the specific figures for the new financial year that begins April first will be known on Friday. Earlier today, we got a perspective of what the economic looks like from Orange Walk Central Representative John Briceño.

“I expect a lot of gimmicks from the Prime Minister. You know he’s a wonderful spin-doctor, he is a good defence lawyer and I always give him credit for that. I think many instances he forgets that he is Prime Minister and thinks that he is in the courtroom defending a client. Obviously from what we’ve seen from the SIB, from the Statistical Institute of Belize, it is telling us that we have an economy which is flat-lining…that we have an economy where the business sector is not investing because the business sector does not have the confidence in the government. It shows that the only employment that has been created is created by the government using taxpayers’ monies. While that is not necessarily a bad thing in the short term, it is unsustainable. We cannot run a country where the government is running the economy. And if you notice what the UDP government has been doing in the past years…they have nationalized at least three different big entities where they have taken it over and now it is in their hands. And I certainly don’t personally believe that is the way to run the country. So the Prime Minister will try his best to pretty up things…but at the end of the day, people out ya think that things haada than eva before.”

But outside the national assembly on Friday, the Belize National Teachers Union is mobilizing its members to continue with a protest of national issues. We’ll have full coverage of the event inside and outside the national assembly.
