B.N.T.U. says the Ministry of Education has double standards

Luke Palacio

The Belize National Teachers Union is also hosting a massive demonstration on Independence Hill this Friday, where the House of Representatives will be convening to present the 2014 National Budget.  While the day off from work is not sanctioned by the Ministry of Education, National President Luke Palacio told the media today that the purpose of the protest is primarily to dispute the five percent salary adjustment.  Palacio says that the increase will not factor in government revenues collected during the month of March and that is of concern to the unions since their negotiations included that period within the timeline.  Nonetheless, B.N.T.U. is appealing to its membership to converge on Belmopan despite the threat of a pay cut.

Luke Palacio, National President, B.N.T.U.

“We are going to Belmopan on Friday based on what we have said earlier in the media as to the reasons. The matter of the salary adjustments has nothing to do with the five percent that the government has indicated. Our issue has to do with that the end of the financial year has not yet come. We continue to look at the national issues that we are raising and we want the public and our membership to understand that the salary adjustments and the increment that teachers and public officers deserve are in no way linked to the salary adjustment. We need to make that abundantly clear as well.”

The B.N.T.U.’s demonstration commences at nine o’clock on Friday and it anticipated that teachers from across the country will be mobilized to attend the protest.

  1. Lord LOL says:

That is not the only double standard we can find under the UDP government.

  2. Derick says:

We’re going out there (to Belmopan) to rally for what is rightly ours and yet Patrick will add insult to it by docking our pay – no problem Patrick we will still go . When we were up against the PUP a few years back YOU Patrick was up in arms fighting along with the teachers; now you are AGAINST us. Where is the love for the profession that you once proudly boast of being a part of. All you wanted was to be in POWER ; you used the teachers to get where you are – but don’t worry ‘Gaad noh d sleep’.
