Mayor Darrell Bradley celebrates two years in office with report card

Earlier we told you that the Mayor is celebrating his two years in office. To mark the occasion, surrounded by councilors, Mayor Darrell Bradley today presented the report card of accomplishments of the council. Top of the list was the massive infrastructural work undertaken throughout the city. Isani Cayetano was present at City Hall for the event.

Since assuming office as Mayor of Belize City in March 2012, attorney-turned-politician Darrell Bradley has been steering the managerial affairs of the Old Capital in a positive direction.  His stewardship of City Hall has seen success, primarily by way of infrastructure development.  The administration, in the view of his supporters, is a breath of fresh air to residents, despite inconveniences that have been caused by road construction, drainage and sanitation.  Today, the Belize City Council presented its midterm report to the media.

“Millions of dollars are being invested in infrastructure both at the level of the municipality and at the level of central government to ensure that we are able to transform Belize City into a place that we all love to live in, as what we have said.  And all of those projects, I estimate, will be substantially underway within the coming months and will be completed prior to the next municipal elections.  We are very pleased to be in partnership with the central government and in partnership with other entities who are investing in infrastructure.”

The municipal bond, launched by local government in November 2012, stands as Mayor Bradley’s hallmark achievement thus far, allowing for the refurbishment of recreational spaces, including B.T.L. and Battlefield parks, as well as the concretization of dozens of damaged streets.

Darrell Bradley

“We are not able to do all streets.  I routinely get the question, “Mr. Mayor you are doing that street, why not my street?”  We will not get all streets.  The master plan is not a three-year plan, it’s a thirty-year plan.  We are able to say with some comfort that one in three streets in Belize City will be concreted before we leave office.  One in three streets and the remaining streets, a significant amount of them, will be upgraded, will be regularly repaired or will be done through this pre-paved method that I alluded to but we cannot do all.”

Concerning the issue of garbage disposal, viewers would recall a proposal, around the time of the municipal bond being introduced, to tack on a ten-dollar collection fee to the water bill.  According to Mayor Bradley, that plan has been done away with since CitCo is actively pursuing the collection of unpaid taxes.

Darrell Bradley

“Our strategy really changed.  Before I tax you, Jules Vasquez, ten dollars for your residential garbage fee, let me see if, it was our thinking and approach, let me see if that ten million dollars that people owe for back taxes, I can’t go for that and that’s where the drivers’ license blockage came in.  And our audit will show that of that ten million dollars we have collected five million of it, so we have collected half of it and it’s that additional revenue, ensuring that we are streamlining our operations, collecting on back taxes and in also ensuring that we are shrinking the city council so our wage bill isn’t going up that allows us to make these decisions comfortably.”

I ‘ll admit, even though this mayor is stubborn at many many occasions, he is the best mayor we had for a very long time.

dont take me wrong i am glad belize city is getting good streets and infrastructuree development and belmopan… Now if we want to be sincere and sarrcastic even myself being a UDP and being of a hispanic ethnicity, we wonder what happens to the rest of the country. I am sorry but even though nobody says it the funding for all these projects come from central government meaning all belizeans money and even the so famous superbond in a nice cap to a loan from central government and if tehy cannot pay we the people of belize willl pay including alll other districts and villlages not only belize city. it should be fair and to all even though we understand why and cannot blame them. the stronghold of this government is belize city BUT there are other UDPS other than belize city wiith other ehtnicity backkgrounds..

One must congratulate the many work that has been accomplished regardless of the inconveniences in terms of traffic. Belize has changed from how i use to know it. Alas, Belmopan, the capital is only getting some stuff done like our back streets that hardly sees traffics but nevertheless, it is something. Our market and Civic centre is still in the making, i hope i am still alive to see it completed. We need a mayor like this one to run Belmopan, ours i think needs major help…. but lets not got there…

I AIN’T FROM THE CITY BUT REALLY BEING A NON PARTY PERSON I APPLAUD THE MAYOR FOR ALL HE’S DONE, EVEN DO SOMETIMES HE PASSES THE LINE HE’S THE ONE THAT HAS DONE MORE THAN HE BARGAIN FOR, BESIDE THOSE THAT HAVE LEFT THE CITY IN SHAMBLES. PAST MAYORS NEVER DID WHAT THIS ONE DID, GOOD FOR HIM, THAT’S HOW THEY EARN THEIR RESPECT FROM THE PEOPLE AND NOT BUYING THEIR VOTES, EARN THEM VISIBLY AND THEN YOU CAN BOAST ABOUT WHAT YOU DID. GOOD JOB MAYOR.
