Separate traffic accidents leave three dead

Story PictureSeparate traffic accidents over the weekend in the Stann Creek and Belize districts have left three people dead. The first occurred late Friday night near mile seventeen on the Southern Highway. Police reports are that twenty-three year old Ryan Valerio and thirty year old Tyrone Flores were heading to Dangriga when their car broadsided a truck travelling in the opposite direction. Valerio and Flores sustained severe head and body injuries and were rushed to the Southern Regional Hospital, but were pronounced dead on arrival. The driver of the other vehicle, thirty-one year old Gilbert Romero also received body injuries and tonight remains admitted to ward. According to the cops, when they got to the scene around one-thirty on Saturday morning they found the two wrecked vehicles on the right hand side of the road. Investigating officers say initial findings indicate that the driver of the car, Tyrone Flores, may have lost control of the vehicle around the mile seventeen curve, spun around, and inadvertently collided into Romero’s truck.

Around eight-thirty on Saturday night, another fatal traffic accident occurred near the Mile Eight community on the Western Highway. Police tell News Five that on that night twenty-one year old Rode Aguilar was driving home to Belize City with thirty-seven year old Mario Portillo when she lost control of the vehicle. We understand the small car ran off the road, flipped several times, and then landed right side up on a street in the housing area. During the accident, Portillo, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was flung from the car and is believed to have died at the scene. His body was later transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Aguilar suffered injuries to her left hand and back, but has since been treated and released. Police say she has been detained pending charges.
