Hazardous waste stockpiling at Punta Gorda Hospital

There are allegations of a harmful situation brewing at the Punta Gorda Hospital tonight.  News Five understands that hazardous waste, including expended hypodermic needles, as well as other biological refuse, is being stockpiled in plastic trash bags inside a storage room on the compound.  While hospital administrator, Ruth McDonald, has declined comment, it is reported that the incinerator which is being used to dispose of dangerous waste has been out of service for almost a year and a half.  On Monday, our colleagues at PGTV entered the facility where they were able to take pictures of the mounting garbage.  According to Wil Maheia, the bags are to be disposed of at the Southern Regional Hospital.

“I was just responding to numerous complaints coming into our offices saying that for weeks, and basically over a month now, hazardous waste had been piling up in the incinerator that has not been working and some of the people from the hospital are really concerned about the situation so they asked me to bring some attention to it. So I went down to the hospital, I basically opened up the door, took pictures and I tried to get a comment from the hospital staff and they just told me that they are not allowed to give interviews.”

“What is a description of what you’ve been able to see in terms of the way this waste is being handled and what have you?”

“Well I see a lot of needles, a lot of red bags that indicate that it is hazardous material and it is just right there….there is a door that is closed, but it is not locked; anybody can pull it. As you can see in the pictures that building is full and it is overflowing into the morgue. Some of the pictures were showing you where various material were stacked right beside the space that is used as the morgue.”

“Okay Wil, my understanding is that this waste was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga prior to the situation where it is now stagnated in Punta Gorda. Can you speak to us a bit on that?”

Via Phone: Wil Maheia

“No, it is supposed to go to Dangriga to be incinerated, but I can tell you that as of yesterday evening when I took those pictures, that hadn’t happened.”

“And the incinerator is out of order for the past eighteen months or so?”

Via Phone: Wil Maheia

“Yes, definitely not working. And you know the amount of money they spent to transport this waste all the way to Dangriga, I think that money could be better spent on repairs and if they get a new incinerator.”

News Five has tried to get comment from the Ministry of Health but our attempts at reaching C.E.O. Peter Allen were futile.

Does PG still have an ambulance?
Maybe they can use it to haul the waste to Dangriga.

The Benque ambulance seems to be unavailable to haul waste for PG.

Could it be a minister personally used the Benque ambulance to haul contraband from Guatemala and did pay his partners in Guatemala for the last haul? Since the Benque ambulance was in Guatemala to pick another shipment, like they say possession is the collateral.

Erwin, that is what happens when cheating another thief and Ali can’t fix it.
