Separate traffic accidents in Belize City injure two

Story PictureIt’s the scene of several fatal accidents and numerous fender benders … but while you might think I’m talking about one of the nation’s major highways, you’d be wrong. The intersection of St. Thomas Street and Princess Margaret Drive has also seen its fair share of blood and is responsible for thousands of dollars in damage. Just after noon today, another accident on the asphalt reminded four drivers just how fast life can change.

?We heard the noise?I heard the noise and we ran out. Whenever things like this I usually come out to see if I can give some help right, but I thought that somebody was dead.?

Traffic police continue to investigate the cause of this afternoon?s pileup at the intersection of St. Matthews and St Thomas Streets and Princess Margaret Drive. No one was seriously injured but the mass of mangled metal in the middle of the street brought traffic to a standstill. All three vehicles were extensively damage including this motorcycle. Eyewitness reports suggest speeding may be responsible for the accident.

?I asking City Council for years to put speed bump on the drive because everybody speed including the policemen, they speed as well. They will not give people chance to come out of St, Thomas Street or St. Matthews Street. Everybody speed.?

News Five?s own investigations have revealed that the green Mitsubishi and the gold Honda were both heading north, towards S.J.C. At the same time this Aerostar van, a taxi from the municipal airstrip was on the other side of the median, apparently trying to make a left turn into St. Matthews Street. It is believed that one of the cars made contact with the van. The motorcycle drove into the scene just as the vehicles collided jumped the median and struck the bike. The cyclist was rushed by ambulance for medical treatment.

?Everybody speed. A child died in my hand years ago on account of that same thing, on account of speeding and you know what it is the innocent. That poor man that was on that motorcycle this morning he got injured he was quite innocent, you know but the two cars they were speeding. That is what caused the accident.?

?Because of the impact, you can tell. I can tell by now, I have been living up here for years and I know, I know, sometimes I hear the noise all the way down with the speed that they are coming under.?

Jacqueline Godwin for News Five.

Belize City traffic police are also investigating an accident that took place this morning at the corner of Partridge and Vernon Streets. We understand that this S.U.V. was on Partridge Street when it was rammed by an empty Mack truck travelling on Vernon Street, causing it to overturn. Witnesses tell News Five the driver of the truck was speeding and did not obey the stop sign on Vernon Street. A little girl travelling in the 4Runner sustained minor injuries. Up to news time tonight, no one involved in either accident had been charged.
