City Council launches its online license services

Motorists whose drivers’ licenses are in need of renewal are now able to do so electronically, thanks to the efforts of the Belize City Council to automate the application and renewal processes.  This morning, City Hall unveiled its latest success.  Residents of the Old Capital can now log on to the Traffic Department’s website and completely forego the long lines, as well as the inconvenience of having to wait for their drivers’ license.  Deputy Mayor B.Q. Pitts Jr. explains the online process.

B.Q. Pitts Jr., Deputy Mayor, Belize City

“I must say that the online renewal system is something that we want to bring to the Belize City residents to assist in ease of time and process. The process is quite simple, but it will serve to bring about the necessary change in the e-commerce market for the Belize City Council, etc. It will form the base for us to do other services such as paying trade services and paying property taxes online. But for now, this is our start with the renewal of driver’s license. I must say it is renewal and not applying. So we ventured on, we communicated with the bank, we did our testing and now we are ready to roll out. again to add to this service here, I want to mention that a part of it, to bring the service online, you will be able to pay via your credit card. Shortly within perhaps a few months or so, we will introduce paying via your bank account and your debit card. This is just a start out phase and eventually perhaps within the year and maybe I would say maybe two months that you will be able to use it via your debit card and as well your bank account. Right now our service is being used through and geared by Atlantic Bank which in our view is the best bank to serve our purpose here.”

“Is there any service charge? Doing it online; does the consumer, does he or she, pays the same price?”

B.Q. Pitts Jr.

“There is no service charge. There are optional charges. For example if you want to have it expedited which you already have and also the option of having it delivered to you; of course that comes with a charge.”

As of this afternoon the website was up and running.

  1. A mother says:

Channel 7 news mentioned that when you go to the Department to pick up the card, after applying on line, you will still have to pay $10.00. My questions are: (1) $10 FOR WHAT?! & (2) THIS MEANS PEOPLE WILL STILL HAVE TO GET IN LINE TO PAY THIS “$10.00″?!
