Minister of Education says there is no breakdown with B.N.T.U.

Patrick Faber

The teachers have held two successful marches and rallies in Orange Walk and Corozal and are planning similar events in the City and the rest of the country. The Belize National Teachers Union says that aside from formal commitment to the salary adjustment from the Prime Minister, there is a slew of national issues that has been preoccupied. But the move by the B.N.T.U. has the Ministry perplexed because according to Minister of Education, Patrick Faber, a meeting was held last Wednesday, prior to the rallies and the B.N.T.U. made no mention of any industrial action. Faber says he taken aback because there is no breakdown between both entities.

Patrick Faber, Minister of Education

“The union is now saying well the reason why we are going to create this kind of action—and I am sorry, if it is not a meeting that is requested via the education act that requires them to ask for permission from the ministry of education—if it is another type of gathering as they have referred to, then that to me signals that there is some breakdown in the communication. If it is not through the collective bargaining agreement negotiations, then it must be some other kind of breakdown of communication which to my mind does not exist. As I’ve said, the B.N.T.U. Officials were in my office the Wednesday before the Friday rallies and no mention of any discomfort in that manner at all. No mention of any of this that they were going to hold rallies or anything like that. This is the Wednesday before the Friday. If it is that they are saying that it is because of so many other things happening as I’ve heard as well. Even though when you listen to what is being said at the rallies and if you listen to the people who you interview and ask them what is the issue, they will tell you salary adjustments. So maybe the union is not getting the message across to the membership and the rank and file as to what is the purpose of the rallies. But for those who have said including the leadership that this is about the corruption and the immigration scandals and all the other things. Then let me ask—and people who are objective can be the judge—is it that this government sits on its hands and all of these things.  All of these things—and I can’t even think of all that is being done at this time—but people who can check the facts will see that this government, while some may argue that it is not enough, cannot say that nothing is being done about these issues that would be the issues that they are claiming are at the forefront because of the need for them to be at the forefront in rallies and so on.”
