…And says it will proceed with industrial action

Luke Palacio

So that is where the B.N.T.U. stands tonight…starting at nine a.m. on Friday in Orange Walk Town and in the afternoon in Corozal Town, teachers from the two northern districts will march in large numbers and conclude their industrial action with rallies. The B.N.T.U. says corruption can’t go unchecked and it is also agitating for written commitments from the government on the salary adjustments and action on the Occupational Safety and Health Bill as well as on Social Security benefits.

Luke Palacio, National President, B.N.T.U.

“In terms of the other national issues, these are issues that are affecting our country and it is time that somebody, some organization, all Belizeans come onboard to try and addressed these national issues that are plaguing our country. And so if the government feels that we are targeting the government that is not the case because some of these issues that we are hoping to address and try to get some corrective measures have been there maybe even before this administration. So that is not the point; we are not targeting the government. But we as educators in this country, we as the workers of the country who toil, we must see a better Belize as it relates to some of these issues that are plaguing us. And that is all the message that we are sending. The national issues are issues that affect workers that affect our daily lives. The National Trade Union Congress, of which the Belize National Teachers Union is an affiliate, has agreed that this year will be the year of the workers. We have asked that legislation been passed to deal with the Occupational Safety and Health Bill, which affects almost every single worker of this country. We are asking that the Social Security Regulations needs some serious revamping if we are going to continue to benefit from such a body. When we look at corruption, we know what the story is. And if we continue to make people believe that it is okay that those things go unchecked, then let’s ask ourselves what country we will have in the future.”
