Gunman’s Bullet Misses Victim, Hits Home on Police Street

There were two shooting incidents over the weekend in the City. In the first at the start of the weekend, a heated argument between two young men on Friday morning resulted in damage to the property of a Police Street resident.  According to Beverly Smith, she was inside her living room when shortly before seven a.m. she heard what appeared to be a loud bang.  Smith then alerted her daughter to the smell of gunpowder and after a brief check of their residence, discovered that a single bullet had penetrated the ceiling of the bungalow.  While they were unable to retrieve the slug, Belize City police are tonight looking for two men whom they believe were involved in the shooting.  Smith recounted that experience this afternoon.

Voice of: Beverly Smith, Police Street Resident

“Early in the morning bout 6:30, before that I get up and I was making some tortilla for my grandchildren to go to school, so I was sitting right here, at the same spot, and I heard a sound, I hear a little altercation outside, but you know I didn’t pay that any mind. Then I hear this, like pop shot like dynamite, but ih sound harder than that and then I, I the knock from that side to this side and I feels the lot of dust the come down pan me but in neva d pay it no mind but then it was the smell. So when I smell the like bullet I say I called to my daughter, I say come here. And say it sound like a gunshot in this house. So she lookup in the ceiling because I tell her ih sound like it’s up da top and so she say yes mommy you see the ceiling, ih bore, so we look around but we noh see no bullet. The gunshot not meant for my house or for me but a young man was quarrelling with the other young man so that was the problem I just wa know if I could get back my ceiling and the light because the light noh work since then. The light noh work, and I noh know if the roof wa leak some time wen it rain hard, but right now e noh leak. That is all the problem. The police was notified right away and they didn’t take long to come. It took about 15 minutes and she explained to them who the person is that did the shooting and they mi have a problem around here because of that, and they rounds up everybody and took everybody at station they could find but they neva find the person that do the shooting nor they noh ker the person weh had the problem. So me left with the problem, no have no light inna the hall but nobody get hurt.”

Initial investigation reveals that on December sixth, a male person was standing on Police Street, when another male approached him from the direction of Linda Vista and fired a single shot at him.  The bullet hit the residence causing the aforementioned damages.
