VIP supports Senate-led Inquiry into passport and visa hustle

Vision Inspired by the People, in light of a recent news article published by the foreign press in which Guatemalan fugitive Roberto Barreda, accused of killing his wife before absconding to Mexico with their two kids and was reportedly found in possession of fraudulent Belizean passports at the time of his arrest in Merida, is tonight demanding a senate-select investigation into the immigration and naturalization scandals.  VIP, in a statement released earlier today, decried the senators appointed by the United Democratic Party for placing importance on the position of their party rather than honoring the demand to have senate-led inquiry into the matter.  VIP says it is concerned that, “many more fugitives or criminals may be running around the world hiding behind a Belizean identity obtained by unlawful means.”  Furthermore, VIP maintains that Minister of Immigration Godwin Hulse must resign his portfolio in order that a senate investigation be carried out.

How many days are we into this scandal? The responses are so tepid and impotent. Yes, this is an important statement. But, seriously, is this the best we can do? In a true democracy, this government would have fallen and the justice system would have moved in already.

  2. Concern says:

The government is doing everything in it’s power not to investigate anyone of its members. Even the man who said he will sue for deformation of character have been exceedingly quiet. Seems he don’t care if the whole world view him as a truly corrupt politician, but FIU have been quiet as well. They were roughing some poor people about old cars in Dangriga earlier this year, but to investigate how minsters have become so rich in just 5 years, is not on their agenda. The man accused of taking thousands of dollars in pass port scam, said he has not seen a hundred thousand dollars in his life, but the money was being given in eight thousand, twelve thousand, etc, so if he has it stashed somewhere, then he could still see what it look like, but if he spent as soon as he collected, then that’s a different matter. We as a people, have to be concern about all this corruption taking place in our little country, while people are suffering.

  3. Guerra says:

On channel seven, a minister said, in regard to US embassy having recordings of some conversations, said that if this is occurring they would be saddened to know that that has occurred, but in our view, we the people would not be upset or saddened. All we are asking for is good honest straight forward governance, so that all can live decent lives in this country. We don’t want the countries resources to be stolen by those we elect to govern over us. What have been happening, is that they appoint their families to key positions, in the hope that whatever corrupt act they do, remain secret, but Belize is too small and the corruption too large to hide, so it become visible quickly. If it takes the USA to intervene, to put the scare of the light of day into our politicians to keep them in line, because they think they can do as they please with us, because they have the police and the army at their disposal, then we welcome help from anywhere, if it will make our country better.

  4. Belizean says:

Mr Lopez, yes we need to investigate the Immigration Dept at full length. However, does it not occur to you that when Robert Barreda the Guatemalan, was given this fraudulent passport, that it was a whole different set of ministers? Can you not remember any further than the last 12 months? Come on, there was scandals of way higher level than what were seeing today, and you wanna blame the last 20 years of scandals, UDP AND PUP combined, solely on this current government? That is way beyond ridiculous!!

  5. Citizen says:

Based on the way the ministers have been covering up all corruption from rose wood to visa scandal, we cannot believe anything the ministers say until they come out and prove that the lady is lying. No matter what they say, we believe the lady! We need open investigation of immigration and the visa scandal. The ministers action prove we cannot accept their word as proof of honesty.

  6. Guerra says:

The Guatemalan Roberto Barreda has been a fugitive since August 2011 and the Belizean passport was given to him by this same government. Whole different set of ministers or not, this only tell you that corruption existed then and continued today! It has to come to a stop!

  7. Rod says:

  8. Belize buay says:

  9. Love says:

Ooops revelation : ) does it not occur to you Belizean that when Robert Barreda, the Guatemalan was given Belizean passport, that it that it was done by this same UDP government that is currently in power, because he has received it after Aug 2011, when he supposedly killed his wife and moved to Mexico Jan 2012 using that same passport, in order to evade scrutiny and capture. This would indicate there were corruption happening under the previous UDP ministers which continued without a hitch into the new UDP government.

  10. Belizean says:

I have not once mentioned that it was specifically NOT happening under the UDP admin. Yes, it was under the UDP then, but different people, You people are not even trying to understand. I’m saying lets get to those that did it then, AS WELL as the ones that did it now!!!!! It is very clear that it wasnt Godwin Hulse, Penner or Castro then. The afforementioned 3 are getting their grilling, lets grill the previous ones too. The very fact that ROD and LOVE are throwing a tantrum is cuz they are politically charged. I was actually trying to expose the corruption rather than cover..BIGOTS
