Near Fatal Accident on the George Price Highway

A near fatal road traffic accident involving a passenger bus and a four-door vehicle resulted in the hospitalization of an elderly woman after sustaining injuries to various parts of the body.  Shortly before three o’clock this afternoon, our Channel Five news team was returning to Belize City when upon reaching mile thirty-nine on the George Price Highway the rear of the Toyota Hilux they were traveling in was clipped by the bus, which was heading in the same direction.  The driver of the bus pulled into the inbound lane and collided head-on with the small car.  Inside were three passengers, including an elderly woman, her daughter and a male driver.  While the airbag on the driver’s side deployed, saving the driver from certain injury, the woman was not as fortunate as she was flung from the back seat of the vehicle into the dashboard.  Our news team was on hand to extricate the passengers from the wreckage and the woman, who was momentarily unconscious, complained of respiratory problems, as well as pain in her neck and left side of the body when she came to.  According to the driver, he attempted to slow down when he neared construction on that stretch of road but his brakes failed.  It is unclear at this point whether the driver will be served with a notice of intended prosecution.

i have to explain a few points; 1) the construction on the road is posing a serious hazard on the the highway at this point. this was a Friday afternoon undoubtedly the busiest day to be traveling on the highway in our country. 2) the highways are already too narrow and to have both lanes (which should be 4 four lanes at least) be channeled into 1 lane is unacceptable. it increases travel time and as the evidence show is dangerous for commuters. 3) this accident is just on of the hundreds of accidents that we experience in our each year involving either taxis or buses. 4) also yesterday Guerra Bus (with Number 8206) blew pass me and about 5 other vehicle including a oil tanker. he overtook all these vehicles around a curve and up a hill right before the Ole Mill. this in it self is totally and utterly unacceptable. the bus drivers are suppose the be the most cautious drivers on the road. they are responsible for the lives of their passenger and the lives of the other drivers on the road. but to the contrary they are the most reckless drivers on the highways in Belize. it is my firm belief that they should be taken off the roads and replaced with better driver or undertake DRIVER’S ED and learn to drive properly

This is like the 4th accident where buses crash into cars due to speed and tailgating. when will the government regulate and get a grip on them-we are getting close to when they will crash into a kill some poor mother taking her kids to work. how ignorant and stupid bus drivers-mayor bradley-you are doing a wonderful thing to rid the city of these morons.

all those buses heading south especially griga line and ricthies bus and james bus always travelling with full speed in the hills imagine d brakes failed while coming down one of the hills with so much passengers inside. They need to be more cautious.
