PAHO recommendations implemented at K.H.M.H.

The final report from the Pan American Health Organization on the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital is now available. The report was carried out by the Pan American Health Organization following the death of thirteen newborns in the first twenty days of May. Seven of those babies died when they were injected with the bacteria, enterobacter cloacae. The report did not seek to assign blame; instead it presented recommendations on how to prevent another calamity of that magnitude. C.E.O. in the Ministry of Health, Peter Allen, says that most of the recommendations have already been implemented.

“The strange thing is that that would have been my expectation when I heard that news that seven or eight newborns have been affected by the infection.  But you’re quite right it doesn’t matter what the number is if there was one and if there was something that could have been done to prevent it then that it is enough. But you’ll see if you go to Karl Huesner now the methods that are put in place to promote infection control and to mitigate against the further risk of infections.  It makes a series of recommendations and from the report please read it for yourself and we encourage everybody to read it because it is extremely helpful in terms of trying to find what we could do to make things better. The report as we’ve said is unable to hold any individual responsible but points to areas in the system that needs to be improved. I can tell you that since the repot has been made public the management of Karl Huesner along with the Ministry of Health staff and along with PAHO advises once again have been going in to conduct regular checks to make sure that all the recommendations are accepted and all of the activities that are recommended are implemented swiftly. Just last week I received a report that over ninety percent of the PAHO recommendations have now been implemented already and I believe that anybody that goes to the K.H.M.H. will be able to see the level of implementation of those recommendations.”

The intensive care unit at the K.H.M.H. was closed down following the baby deaths, but up to now, not one single head has rolled at the K.H.M.H.
