John Saldivar and Plus TV reach a settlement

John Saldivar

Tonight, there is an out of court settlement agreed to between Minister John Saldivar and Plus TV’s owner Louis Wade and co-host of the Rise and Shine Morning Show, Jason Andrews. Saldivar sought legal action against the Belmopan based television station as well as Andrews claiming they had libeled and defamed him in late December 2012. At the time, Wade said that when he did not fire Andrews at Saldivar’s insistence, then the minister followed up with a suit on April tenth, 2013. But today both sides reached an agreement; the powerful Minister says that it wasn’t about money but about his reputation.

John Saldivar, Minister of National Security

“The two defendants, Plus TV and Mister Andrews had agreed to do an apology for the words that were uttered by Mister Andrews on the Rise and Shine show and we have agreed to accept that apology.”

“Will there be any settlement, any money, paid as financial compensation for the ill-repute as you see it?”

John Saldivar

“Well from the onset, I had made it clear that this was about my reputation and defending my name. It wasn’t about the money. I am not interested in getting any money from Plus TV and Mister Andrews. They will however have to pay my lawyers the cost of bringing this case forward.”

Louis Wade, Plus TV

“I’m happy to say that today, just a few moments before they began to work out the file case management; that we were able to come to that final agreement and conclusion. I think people felt and….we felt comfortable with this opportunity for both sides to come together and have an amicable out of court settlement.”

Louis Wade

“Do you regret that this occurred?”

Louis Wade

“You know, Plus TV has made a commitment to the nation of Belize that we will deal with every issue that comes across our table. Plus TV has made a commitment that all of its programs are going to obey the law and as far as possible will ensure that what we say is factual and fear comment and that most importantly, our hosts and our callers…because one of the shows is a live-call-in…that they have that fear opportunity—or opportunity without fear—to be able to share their comments. And so essentially that is the atmosphere that we engender at Plus TV and I’m happy to say that that continues and will always continue. People must continue to be free to—within the law—share their comments and know that if dehn dah P.U.P., U.D.P., VIP or no P, they can get fair airing on Plus TV and I’m happy to say that is where it is and that is where it will continue.”

John Saldivar

“I feel vindicated and I want to say too that I am very happy that Louis and Jason agreed to this apology so that we can still preserve friendships.”

Reporter

“Now exactly how do you proceed with Plus TV? Will relations now be normalized because you are the representative for Belmopan where Plus TV is based. You don’t want to have an enemy in the media at your home base.”

John Saldivar

“I’m hoping that this will normalize our relationship once again.”

Reporter

“Sir is it an unreserved apology, an unqualified apology?”

John Saldivar

“It will be published by Plus TV on the Rise and Shine Show on Wednesday and Thursday and Friday.”

Soon after the threat of legal suit, Andrews announced that he will be contesting the P.U.P. convention in Belmopan to take on Saldivar.
