Two murders within hours in the Wild West; masked man kills Camalote resident

Juan Carlos Olmedo

Belmopan Police believe that they have in custody the two persons who murdered American David Reichel and Filipino Alry Rose Sardido on Saturday in Roaring Creek. But even as they prepare to lay charges, they have been faced with two additional murders. Those murders occurred in Camalote on Monday evening and claimed the lives of Juan Carlos Olmedo and Oscar Leonel Benitez. Both men were gunned down within an hour of each other, and Police are looking for one gunman for both murders. We look first at the murder of Olmedo. He was shot down in front of his family in broad daylight in his home. Mike Rudon was in Camalote today and has the story.

Twenty-seven year old Juan Carlos Olmedo sold food at the Belmopan market…food which was cooked every day by his common-law wife Lorraine Burgess. On Monday, he returned here to their home in Camaloteat around four to pick up Burgess so they could go buy vegetables. They got ready while Burgess’ two children watched television. But before they could leave the home, a masked man armed with a gun burst in.

“The masked man put the gun and ih tell him; weh di money. But I tell the masked man we noh have money only the food we have weh we just sell. See the food yah; yo want it? But ih say no, I want the money. So ih demand my bwai fi di money. So [my bwai] insist that no money noh deh. So when he say that, he point the gun at him and said I noh have time to play right now. Run the money or else yow ah get shoot…all ah unu wah get dead. So my lee gial start to cry and said no; noh shoot my ma. Please noh shoot my ma and ah wah give yo the money. So I went and get the money and by the time I went and get the money, I just hear three gunshots…done shoot my bwai. Ih drop and when I di search fi  di money, I gone and take out the money out of his pocket…three change and I mi got mine ina my wallet. And I take out all the monies and I give it to ahn. And when I done give he di money he just run through the door with the money. But he got the gun dah my head fi make I get the money fi ahn. And if I neva get the money, dah me mi wah get shoot too. Olmedo was shot in the chest, face and head, and Burgess says that he was dead by the time he hit the floor. She says the motive was robbery, though Police are looking at a possible second motive based on a request by the robber.

“Mr. Olmedo was along with his family and the assailant came from through the back demanding money and other stuff that I chose not to disclose. And when Mister Olmedo refused to hand over some money to him, his common-law, Miss Burgess, handed over the monies to him. And he insisted that he wanted something else apart from the money and that was when Mister Olmedo was fatally shot. And just from the way the assailant came, he exited where he came from…that’s through the back; through the bushes and through the hydro road. Yes we know what is the motive, but I chose not to disclose at this present moment. Apart from the money, there were other things that the assailant demanded.”

According to Burgess, when they were approached by the gunman Olmedo greeted him like he knew him. But he never called out a name. She is convinced that her common-law husband was murdered by someone who knew him well.

“I know he know ahn because he stared at him. And two of them di stare one another. And you know why ih kill ahn, because he know ahn. He done known ahn already by his voice that’s why ih do it.”

The gunman ran out of the house and through this bush as he made his escape. Mike Rudon for News Five.
