The weekend games of cycling, female football and basketball

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The Atlantic Bank Inter-district Female Football Competition produced its champion Saturday at the F.F.B. Stadium as Triple B and Ladyville Jaguars made that final confrontation after last week’s scoreless finish inside the MCC grounds. Immediately into the ballgame, Triple B makes the statement that game 2 would be totally different as Kaina Martinez strips Mercedes Choc for an open look at goal that should have opened the scoreboard. We’re some 14 minutes in when Martinez streaks in for another look at goal; she is clipped from behind by Sherain Tracey, but stays with the play to get Triple B their 1st goal of the match. 2 minutes later, Miriam Villamil attacks from the right side to fire this ball at goal that leaves the keeper, Claudia Martinez, defenseless as triple B take a 2-zip lead. Meanwhile, Kaina’s speed is a major weapon for Triple B as she demonstrates here, but the left foot fails her in the scoring attempt.

At the other end, Kara Kisling does everything right on this press but fails to come up with the power to beat Idania Ramirez. Some 33 minutes in, Kaya Cattouse deals to Martinez who outruns the field to score her 2nd goal of the match for the Triple B 3-zip lead. Folks this is not a replay as Cattouse and Martinez hook up again and just like that it’s a 4-zip ballgame at the 43rd minute. So we go to 2nd half and we’re 5 minutes in when Martinez turns provider for Jenisha Scott whose volley makes it a 5-nil score. Meanwhile, even the Ladyville fans must admit that it’s a rout in progress when Martinez moves in to make it 6 to nothing. Miriam Villamil then fires this right foot for her 2nd goal of the match to push the score to 7-nil.

A few minutes later, Rosebell Ogaldez strips Alma Alarcon and survives a shoulder to shoulder contact with Sherain Tracey to make it a 8-nil final score. We say congratulations to the 2013 Inter-District Female Champion Triple B who were obviously the best teams this season. The Ladyville Jaguars were not happy with their 2nd place finish; but the truth is they were ill-prepared for Game II. In the individual awards ceremony after the match, Kaina Martinez emerged with MVP honors, Iris Centeno was voted best midfielder, Shandi Vernon took home Best Defender—all of Triple B—while Kara Kisling of Ladyville scored the most goals and Claudia Martinez is deemed the best goalkeeper in the league.

Turning to the Cycling Scene, the Weekend Warriors criterium ran through the Albert/Regent Street circuit yesterday and here’s the finish to the A-classs event. Barney brown pulls the trigger in a 9 man sprint with everybody chasing. Barney Brown o Scotia Bank win the 25 laps ride in 1 hour 4 mins 28 seconds forcing the Digicell riders Kirk Sutherland and Jack Sutherland into 2nd and 3rd respectively. Warren Coye finished 4th and Derrick Smith rounds out the top 5. In B-class 20 laps was taken by Anwar Barrow of Digicell 4G in 58 mins 35 seconds. His teammate Isaiah Willacey took 2nd while Maurice Kelly of BCB/FT Williams pulled up 3rd. Salvador Alvarado of Zitro won the C-class in 42:39 with Manuel Esquiliano of Truckers 2nd and Nelson Zyden of Medina’s Jewelry finished 3rd. Ernest Thurton of Santino’s took the Devil, the hindmost rider event in 30 mins 49 secs forcing Wilbert Jones of Digicell into 2nd. Beat Brunchweiler of Cayo Rentals took 3rd place. Looking ahead this Sunday, 15th September, the BCA will present its criterium ride on the Albert/Regent Street Circuit and you won’t want to miss it.

In basketball, we caught up with the clash between Customs and Courts in the firm’s competition at Bird’s isle Saturday. And it’s Kevin Lorenzo of Customs with the acrobatic shot for 2 of his 18 points to go along with 9 rebounds. Courts replies with good ball movement. Edward Bennett finds Fidel Blair whose no-look pass reaches Rennon Pandy who gets the bucket. Pandy and Blair then reverse roles as Lidel finishes against Oliver Solis for 2 of his 11 game points. And at the end of the 1st quarter, Customs lead 14 to 12. We go to the 2nd quarter and Solis links up with Marvin Skeet who is totally undefended so he sinks the jumper. He would finish with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Courts comes back when Tyronne Anthony deals to Keith Pollard who would strike for 15 point tonight. Tyronne Anthony then sinks this triple for Courts—he would finish with 20 points, 10 rebounds; the only 2 doubles of the night. At the half, Customs leads 19-28.

Folks this one would be close…the whole way and Winston Pratt foes the length of the court for this bucket. He would post 17 points and 9 rebounds for Customs. Here is how the ballgame breaks down people. If Tyronne Anthony hits this triple Courts goes up by one, but he misses and Pratt gets the rebound and he is fouled. Winston Pratt hits both freebies—Customs post the 60 to 56 big Win. In other action around the league; Port of Belize burned City Council 59 to 57 Heritage Bank beat Belize Bank 68 to 55, B.T.L. stopped Central Health 59 to 47 and BWSL rolled over Ready Call 74 to 47.
Finally folks, Belize Female Youth National Team finished 4th at the Central American Championship and we congratulate them on their improvement. Meanwhile, Karen Quan won the Best Setter Award; Kevanna Sebastian was the Best Blocker and Naya Tun emerged the Best Digger and Best Libero. Good show girls.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
