Bomb threat at national university

The Central Campus of the University of Belize received a bomb threat at around five-forty Thursday evening. All students were evacuated by the security of the national university. Police and the MIT Unit as well as the bomb dog of the K-nine Unit searched all eighteen buildings as well as the rest of the compound. The operation lasted some eight hours and officers completed their search sometime around two a.m. No explosive device was found on the university campus. And while no one was physically injured, Public Relations Officer of U.B, Selwin King, says that students have been affected by the classes that had to be canceled but resumed by today.

“Immediately we activated our evacuation plan whereby students, faculty and staff were evacuated out of the classrooms, offices and throughout all the buildings. We called in the police; they were here within about half an hour, forty minutes and they had the K-nine unit. It is unfortunate that we do have in every society people that have challenges with their normal state of mind…let me put it this way. And it is unfortunate that classes had to be canceled yesterday evening for quite a number of students. So these students who have missed yesterday’s class will also be missing Tuesday’s class because of the holiday. So it is unfortunate. And you can’t take any measure other than to evacuate because you never know what is prank, what is real and what’s not real.”

King says that since its inception in 2000, there has only been one other bomb threat within the first two years of being established.
