Barrow says ruling on communal land does not include Sarstoon Temash National Park

Dean Barrow

SATIIM and Mayan leaders of communities in the Sarstoon Temash National Park are waging war against the government of Belize. They feel that government is not recognizing rights which the court has ruled are theirs, over communal land. They also condemn G.O.B.’s approval of an oil exploration permit to U.S. Capital Energy. The drill site lies within the national park, and so does a significant portion of an access road to that drill site. The situation between the Mayan activists and leaders and the oil company has gotten testy of late and shows no sign of fizzling out. But while the passion of the Mayas drives their righteous anger, for the P.M. it’s all black and white. He insists that the court ruling on communal land simply does not include the Sarstoon Temash National Park.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“We have, I believe, put out a statement saying that we respect the court’s decision even though we are appealing it. And so no new titles, nothing of the sort, will be done in the Toledo District. That ought to satisfy them. If it doesn’t, then I am afraid they are off based, out of kilter. The SATIIM National Park is a national park you know. The court hearings, the litigations, on the instance of the villages and the court talked about lands owned by the villagers. As far as I am concerned, the national park is not included in that. And in any event, the national park is subject to a particular legal and statutory regime. In my view, there can be no question of any kind of ownership other than the ownership of them state when it comes to the national park which has been legislated over. When you are talking about…let me not get into it because I think all that will come up in court in terms of the injunction and that. And perhaps I ought to just stop there by saying that as far as I am concerned, the court decision does not include the national park at all.”

  1. Emperor declares says:

The emperor declares the courts are irrelevant.

  2. Belizean says:

Actually @Emperor declares, Mr Barrow said, they respect the courts decision. He simply said, and in fact it is so, the courts ruling cannot and will not be a deciding factor once it comes to a “NATIONAL PARK”. And by the way, who has ever heard that civilians have the rights to minerals? Huh? Who? Mineral rights (oil rights) are solely a state owned right. That right there is the constitution of BELIZE. So please, people, think before you speak!

    EXCELLENT POINT!

But then again we like to think small and complain about everything – lets analyze things and look at the big picture for a change emperor declares and then and only then we will be able to move forward as a country
