Belize City Council prepares to receive newly renovated Memorial Park

Darrell Bradley

The restoration of Memorial Park, a massive undertaking spearheaded by the Sustainable Tourism Project, through the Belize Tourism Board, has been completed after months of painstaking labor.  The newly renovated space will be officially opened to the public in time for the September Celebrations.  While the property is that of the Belize City Council, activities in and around the park, as they pertain to tourism, will be organized by B.T.B.  To do so, a co-management agreement is currently being drafted to allow for oversight in certain areas of the recreational space.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“The Memorial Park project is something that was carried out by the STP program and that’s being run through the Ministry of Tourism and B.T.B. and we have an excellent relationship with the people from B.T.B. and we are discussing in terms of a co-management agreement because they will turn the park back over to the city being that it is completed and we are going to share responsibility in relation to certain aspects of it.  Of course, the tourism-related issues, in terms of tour operators and people who would use the park for tourism purposes, that has always been under the jurisdiction of the B.T.B. and it will likely continue to be under the jurisdiction of the B.T.B.  The B.T.B. has also pledged their support in terms of assistance with the continued maintenance of the park and we expect that we would shortly conclude the co-management agreement and we’re very excited that the park is being completed for the benefit of residents of Belize and for people who visit Belize.  And this is quite in line with our vision for Belize City as being a city teeming with economic opportunities and opportunities for specifically jobs and entrepreneurship and the park will accommodate lots of small businesses.  The B.T.B. also developed an operations manual that will ensure for proper maintenance and monitoring of the park.  We’re working in terms of regulating traffic flows around the park.  Of course you see the Busby and all of those things.  All of those things have been thought about so that the park itself is only but a fraction of the wider project and the work that has been put in place by the STP.”
