14 deserving students received scholarships

Fourteen high school and sixth form students were today awarded opportunities to pursue secondary and tertiary education through B.T.L.’s scholarship program.  The twenty-second annual Scholarship Award Ceremony was held at the Radisson this morning, where thirteen students received high school scholarships and one was awarded a sixth form bursary.  The scholarship committee, made up of a cross-section of B.T.L. employees, narrowed down the numbers considerably from an initial five hundred applicants.  The recipients were chosen based on financial need and academic performance.

Dr. Dionne Miranda, General Manager, Customer Service, B.T.L.

“We had over five hundred scholarship applications come in and we had to cut it down to sixty and then down to the fourteen that we have.  And the reason for that is that we do have to keep within a certain budget and we have over seventy-five people on scholarships right now.  So it was difficult because everyone has the need, everyone, I mean these children are smart, that’s one thing I can tell you about Belizeans.  One thing I can also tell you is that the family fabric is still there, even if it’s a single parent the mothers are involved or the father because again single fathers play a serious role in this country.  They are involved.

Dionne Miranda

So at the end of the day if your criteria is academics and the child is doing that, it’s financial and they’re all needy.  Thirdly, you want to see involvement that the parents are involved and play that role to support the child and everybody meets it, it then become a challenge.  So I’d like to say that the challenges really have to do with the fact that our budget is exhaustible and we have to monitor that.  But I can say that our children, we’re going to have a great country if we continue supporting and, you know, getting involved and playing that role because it’s not only about the money and the books.  It’s about companies actually taking their employees, who have gone through the stresses of parenthood and sharing that with the children and so that is the important part that I would hope that other companies who give scholarships realize.  Books are nice, tuition is nice but sometimes these kids need somebody to talk to.”

“It’s interesting that you would bring up the idea of mentorship.  I know that a lot of the recipients have been paired up with employees of the company, who provide certain assistance in terms of counseling and advising them as they go along through either their academic life, as well as their personal life.  What has that been like in terms of its impact on employees of B.T.L.?”

Dionne Miranda

“It’s been difficult because some of them feel that they want to do more and so$, basically some of them have been coming out of pocket doing things like helping with food and that sort of thing.  But again, I think it’s developing decency and integrity and good people.”

B.T.L. will cover all expenses to include books, tuition and fees for the four years necessary to complete high school while the sixth form recipient will have both years paid.
