It seems that when most men hear the word prostate; there is only one image that comes to mind. The prostate gland while out-of-sight should never be out-of-mind for aging men. Dr Daniel Godinez, explains some of the common problems men tend to have with their prostate.

Dr. Daniel Godinez, Internal Medicine Specialist

Daniel Godinez

“The prostate is a very small gland that is located just below the bladder and has a very important function for the reproduction of fluids.  The prostate is useful only in men. Women have a prostate too but basically it so small and under developed that basically we say it does not exist and essentially women never suffer prostatic problem. In men, especially as age advances due to the hormone testosterone; in men the prostate usually the age of fifty.”

Because of its proximity to the bladder, the main sign that there may be a problem with your prostate is problems when urinating.

Dr. Daniel Godinez

“Repeated urine infections in males; especially older males is an indication that the prostate may be causing problems.  Going to the bathroom more frequently than normal or having to wake up in the middle of the night, which is not the normal situation. And finally, having problems voiding the bladder. Basically the prostate can suffer three kinds of conditions, number one, it can suffer an infection which we call prostatitis; secondly, it can develop cancer of the prostate which is actually one of the most common cancers in men and thirdly as age advances there is a natural process where the prostate get enlarged. This is not can cancerous and for that reason it is called benign prostatic growth.”

If you can identify with any of the symptoms the next step is to visit your doctor. This is usually where the most men hesitate but very few know that there are several ways to screen the prostate.

Dr. Daniel Godinez

“One of the easiest ways to do the exam is to pass a finger through the rectum and feels the prostate. Because they are very close to one another, you can easily find that way if they are enlarged or if they are any abnormalities. But they are other ways; we can test through the blood called a PSA or do an ultra sound and find out what is going on with the prostate.”

Of course, the general recommendation is that men begin to take the PSA screening at the age of fifty. For those, who are below fifty, Dr. Godinez has a few tips to keep the prostate healthy.

Dr. Daniel Godinez

“There are a few things you can do to decrease the chances of you getting problems with the prostate. One of them have to do with diet…the way we eat is very important. Practice the eating of fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, red peppers; even those famous pepitos or pepitas that Belizeans are so keen of have substances that can prevent the prostate from getting sick. Also limiting the intake of alcohol or cigarette smoking or caffeine can also improve the health of the prostate.”
