He is known to everyone in Orange as “el primer tacero,” the first tacos man or Senor Waco. But on Sunday evening, seventy-six year old Onofre Sabido was attacked and robbed inside his home in the village of San Jose Palmar in the outskirts of Orange Walk Town. Sabido is confined to a wheelchair and what’s even more frightening is that his two assailants are from his own village and known to him. The incident occurred around five p.m. says neighbor, Rick Cowo, who ran to Sabido’s aid when he heard him scream for help.

Rick Cowo, First Respondent

“I was sitting at my house and five minutes I heard someone screaming for help. I ran through the back of my house to see what’s going on. As I reached, I saw this guy Mister Sabido full of blood. Mister Sabido, he is about in his nineties. He was screaming for help and he was soaking wet with lone blood. I saw him because I put a piece of cloth on his forehead because he had some bruises and cut wounds on his face and his side. I think about more than three or four cut wounds; very deep and he was soaking wet will lone blood.”

Cowo ran for help and the entire village including its active neighborhood watch members came to assist. Sabido was rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital for treatment.

“He has five cut wounds on his forehead…here here and here. The worse was on his nose. And on his arm, they hit him with the bottle and he had to get stitches there as well. He says he kicked the person that was assaulting him and the guy took the bottle and hit him on his knee. His wrists are blue, his eyes were filled with blood and his eye sockets were left black and blue. His face is also swollen from where they hit him with the bottle.”

But what could have triggered the despicable actions by these youths against a stalwart in the village?  His daughter, Maria Garcia says it’s robbery.

“They had some kids, the age of eight, six and seven…he is the grandfather of all of those kids and they were playing hide and seek right at the backyard of their grandfather’s house and when they saw the guys came, they removed themselves from the areas.”

But as the group gathered at the scene, the alleged culprits rode up to them. That is when they were identified by several minors who were playing in Sabido’s backyard and overheard the entire ordeal.

“Those guys came this side of the cemetery when the people, everybody was waiting for them. It took about half an hour when those guys came from the back. They went this way from the front and they appeared on these back streets here.”

Duane Moody

“The men rode off on bicycles in that direction.”

Rick Cowo

“The two of them. They are not exactly from the village but one of those guys have his wife living right here in the main street of the village.”

Duane Moody

“So they didn’t know him? They are foreign to here?”

Rick Cowo

“They have about four to five years living in the village.”

The men, one of them a minor, were arrested by the special constable of the village and taken to the Orange Walk Police Station. Duane Moody for News Five.
