Galen University awards two Jaguars with honorary degrees

They have been recognized internationally by CONCACAF and FIFA for integrity during the recent Gold Cup…and this past weekend Team Belize’s Ian Gaynair and Woodrow West also received the Eagle Award for integrity and sportsmanship. The recognition was bestowed by Galen University during its graduation ceremonies, and acknowledges the character of both men for refusing a financial bribe to throw the games just before the start of round one. While Gaynair and West have received no official commendation from government, their actions earned them a VIP spot in the president’s box at the Gold Cup finals and special mention. And now, they will serve as role models to the students of Galen University. President of the university, Dr. Louis Zabaneh told News Five today that poverty is no excuse for compromising our integrity.

Louis Zabaneh

“Usually at our graduations we use the opportunity to award outstanding Belizeans. At our last graduation we had Mr. Cacho and Mr. Nabor were awarded with the Eagle’s Award for their outstanding contribution to music. This year we thought it was ideal that both Mr. Gaynair and Mr. West have honoured our country by the decision they made not to take the bribe in Guatemala. And we thought that we wanted to let them know that we appreciate that level of integrity that has been recognized internationally where they got the award at the closing ceremonies in Chicago. Indeed we made them a part of the ceremony yesterday and gave them the Eagle Award both for outstanding sportsmanship and for integrity. Not because we come from a poor country or in their cases they are persons who are fighting it every day working in different areas…that you will be handed a certain amount of money…and they stood up and said no, they will not accept it and this is something that we all need to promote in our society that poverty should not lead us to take certain actions that compromise our integrity. And definitely they are role models and certainly at a graduation where our students are going out into the work force and this is what we teach…we try to ensure that beyond academics character is very important and we thought that this would reinforce what Galen is about.”
