Sports Monday highlights with James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

There’s a new spirit prevailing inside the Cycling Community as the Belize Cycling Association heads into the 1st General Election for the National Body on Saturday, August 25th at 2 p.m. inside the University of the West Indies Open Campus here in Belize City. We understand Daniel Cano of San Ignacio is the man to beat going in. unfortunately we could not get confirmation from Deon Leslie of Belize City and outgoing President, Emil Morenoof Cayo concerning their participation in the election. Nevertheless people, the BCA gave its full support to the Belikin Western Spirit King of the Hill Race presented in Cayo yesterday. This cycling race was open to all classes as it travelled along the San Ignacio Town/Benque Hill, circuit with some 40 riders in the hunt.

And they’re off for the 20 lap feature that would earn the winner the title of King of the Hill 2013. Fans came out in large numbers to witness the event and they were not disappointed. And here’s the big finish. It’s the cross country champion, Giovanni Choto pulling the trigger, the challenge comes from 2 junior riders; Delon Gentle and Giovanni Lovell. Giovanni Choto of Belikin Western Spirit gets up off his machine to grab the title in 2013. Delon Gentle of Cayo Uprising holds on for 2nd place while Giovanni Lovell of B.T.L. takes 3rd place. Some 32 seconds later, Nissan Arana depredadores pulls up unscathed for 4th place while Donesetti Vasquez takes out Daniel Choto for 5th place.

In the weekend warrior king of the Hills race staged earlier, Beat Brunschweiler beat James Frampton and Jose Moguel in that order to take top honors in the A Class. Isaiah Willacy won the B class with hector Tzuleta 2nd and Mile Philips 3rd while Manuel Esquilliano took the C Class.

It certainly was a busy weekend for the Weekend Warriors who presented a 40 mile race from Willows Bank Junction to the Bermudian Landing Bridge and back. As you can see some of the big boys were invited to play. As expected, the big boys takes command of the pace—Byron Pope, Giovanni “Froggy” Leslie are the duo up front. Now here’s the sprint for the money. It’s Giovanni Leslie of Sanitono’s and Byron Pope in a dead heat so both share top honors. Gregg Lovell of Telemedia pulls up uncontested for 3rd place.

Turning to the boxing scene, we introduce to you for a 2nd time, Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson who is a Mexican Belizean, the son of Fernando Thompson of Corozal, who is to your left. Saturday night Thompson in black and yellow challenged Takashi Miura for the WBC Super Featherweight Title at the Plaza de Toro Arena at Cancun Mexico on Saturday night. Yeyo was knocked down in the 3rd but got up to go all 12 rounds and would deck Miura in the 8th round, but would lose in a majority decision. While Miura ended up in the hospital. There is Thompson’s dad with the Belize flag when he is being introduced by none other than the classy Jimmy Lennon Junior. And these are a few of the Belizeans who were at the fight to support one of ours. We thank Joe Marin for his great assistance with this story.

In football news, the Belize U-15 National Team has been impressive at 2013 CONCACAF U-15 Championships at Cayman. They opened with a 1-nil win over St. Lucia, beat Jamaica 3-1, but lost to Guatemala in a scorching 1-zip affair. Belize will compete its 1st round schedule against St. Lucia who they must beat by 6 goals to advance and Jamaica must beat Guatemala currently Guatemala leads with 9 points, Jamaica and Belize show 6 a piece, but Jamaica has the better goal average. Grenada has 3 points and St. Lucia is yet to earn a point.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
