Belize U-15 in competitive football games in Cayman

Luis Pena

A team of young football athletes is representing the jewel in the CONCACAF U-fifteen Championship being held in the Cayman Islands. And today in their first match against St. Lucia, team Belize beat that country one-nil. The tournament will see participation from Central American and Caribbean countries as well as CONCACAF member states. And Belize’s hope to win and bring back gold rests on the shoulders of nine young athletes. News Five spoke with Public Relations Officer of the F.F.B., Luis Pena.

“The tournament started today, thirteenth of August and Belize is playing four-thirty today against St. Lucia. We also play on Thursday against the Dominican Republic and on Friday we play Jamaica. Next week we play Guatemala and then the final game we play Grenada. The president has stated that our national teams will no longer just go to participate in any tournament. We are going there to win and as such our boys are prepared and the selection is ready to commence playing.”

“How long have they been training for this event?”

Luis Pena

“The selection was called before the national A-team left for the U.S. to play the Gold Cup so they have been in camp more or less from July.”

“I know you said that we are out there for the win. Who is it that Belize is really seeing as the one to beat or that will give them a challenge in the competition?’

Luis Pena

“Well right now at the U-fifteen level, all the teams are very competitive. So we have a big match ahead of us. I mean the entire tournament will not be an easy one. As you know the U-fifteen selections for those countries have been together for a while and have played before. This is the first time that our team is leaving to lay in a tournament.”

Duane Moody

“What’s your expectation for today’s game?”

Luis Pena

“Well Belize has a history of always winning when we play Caribbean teams. As you notice, Deon McCauley is one of the top scorers right now for the FIFA World Cup 2014. And we have always done our best against Caribbean teams. So we are looking forward to our boys following the path of the national A team.”

The contingent is being led by Chairman of the Orange Walk Football Association, Rafael Avila.
