Though motion is rejected, Julius Espat promises to bring back the PAC

Julius Espat

Earlier in the newscast, the motion presented by Julius Espat for changes to the PAC was denied. News Five spoke to the Espat after the speaker rejected the motion. Espat was surprisingly optimistic and intends to bring back his motion as many times as it takes to get it passed.

Jose Sanchez

“There were many procedural errors that were pointed out. Why didn’t you seek an attorney within your party?”

Julius Espat, Deputy Leader, P.U.P.

“We sought all the advice that we possibly could have but what I said in the House is what I am serious about. There is interpretation to everything that you do. If you go into court, the attorneys on one side interprets it different from the attorneys from the other side. That is how it is worked in the fraternity of the legal profession. I won’t get into that, but we tabled a motion to create and look at a joint committee. They tabled it as an amendment to a standing committee. That wasn’t what I tabled. I tabled and I can say, “We are proposing a public accounts joint committee so that the House can look and review.” When it came on the table today it says, “Amendment to Standing Orders”. I can show you what I tabled and what the heading was. All they did was look at the heading that was presented to us and if you looked at that heading, yes we needed eight days. The speaker had the authority to waive that. The prime minister noh waive all kinds of things when he nationalizes companies? He noh disrespect the rule of the court? He can do what he wants. This time he has to do what is beneficial for the people of Belize. So if there is any change that they want me to do to the motion, I will go…I will humbly go to them again. I will never give up because the people of Belize deserve true accountability. If I have to sit down with Gandhi, if I have to sit down with Sedi, if I have to go sit down with Daddy Barrow himself; I will humble myself because it is not about me. It is about serious change. And when you go through serious change in Belize especially, you will get beaten, you will be hit on the ground and you will be stomped and kicked. That is the process that you will have to go through to try to achieve something. But the people here, these are the people that you have to represent.”

This is an opportunity for government to at least try to appear to be clean.
