Luke Espat and Collet Montejo for Cayo Central

Luke Espat

Luke Espat has announced his political candidacy in Cayo Central in loud fashion. The reaction to that announcement both inside and outside the People’s United Party has been mixed, but Espat remains confident. The problem is that Cayo Central already has a political officer. Collet Montejo narrowly lost that seat in 2012 and since then has been working as the Chairman of the Executive Committee in that constituency. Espat says that Montejo informed him that he didn’t intend to contest the area and now has apparently changed his mind. Tonight we’ll have more of Espat’s interview from Tuesday, and also a response from Montejo, who says Espat is being premature.

Luke Espat, P.U.P. Political Aspirant, Cayo Central

“What is there to condemn me about? I can stand up on my oats. I can defend myself on any forum, with any of them including Mr. Barrow. As I’ve always said, I am here to live in Belize. I have no interest in going anywhere. I have no other commitments anywhere but here. And that is what I’m going to do…serve the people from Cayo Central.”

“What’s the response you’re getting so far? It seems that you’ve hit the ground running.”

“My friend…it is unbelievable. I am being hugged in every nook and cranny I go to in Cayo Central. Everybody wants some glimpse of hope.”

“I’ve been working in there for the past three years. We will continue working. As a matter of fact in no way, shape or form I must indicate to the people who have expressed concern as to my contesting that seat or not…I will definitely contest that seat for the People’s United Party. We welcome the challenge that Mr. Espat will bring. Eventually and basically the people of Cayo Central will decide who they want to represent them for the People’s United Party leading up to the next general elections.”

“Mr. Espat indicated to me that you told him that you did not intend to run and that is why he stepped in. Is that correct?”

“That is the farthest thing from the truth, Mike. I must confess that I have been contemplating the entire thing but after discussing with people who are very close and dear to me and people whose advice I treasure I decided and I indicated to him that I needed time to contemplate my decision. But I’ve decided formally that I will be contesting the seat. Therefore if it means that we need to go to a convention then that is exactly what will happen in Cayo Central… There’s been no endorsement of Mr. Espat in that constituency. While we welcome his coming in to work with the committee, our committee has not even decided on a date for the Cayo Central convention. Right now his actions seem to me to be a bit premature.”

According to Montejo, he has already expressed concern about Espat’s candidacy to P.U.P. Leader Francis Fonseca via email.

What next? Bill Lindo will want to be a standard bearer? If PUP is honest about a new party then these types need to be flushed out of the system like a high pressure toilet…

  2. Da Undertaker says:

Espat is harping “HOPE”. Me too. I hope Espat decides not to run.

I am Belize City based, but if I was Cayo based, UDP would have my vote. I hope the PUP finds someone else to replace Espat and his HOPE machine.
