Chamber president says recent Auditor General report needs examining

Kay Menzies

But Espat is going to have a very hard time tabling the motion to reorganize the PAC since Prime Minister Dean Barrow has said that he will bring his proverbial gunpowder for an explosive meeting. On August second, he told News Five (Quote) “I will take all sorts of objections to it based on the Standing Orders…Maybe I should save my powder for that day.” (Unquote) But the Chamber of Commerce’s President, Kay Menzies believes that the reshuffle is necessary because the committee has been dormant for too long and it is necessary to examine the most current Auditor General Reports.

Kay Menzies, President Chamber of Commerce

“They all need looking at. There is deep, deep problems throughout. But no reason not to start with the immediate. Because it is a matter of fixing problems based on the auditor general’s report if you get to them ten years 2 late the problems don’t get fixed.”

Jose Sanchez

“Part of the problem with the committee so far is that the political will is under whose government corruption occurred?”

Kay Menzies

“Yes I think we need to take a more barred partisan point of view. And that’s why the chamber likes the idea of a more neutral senators being involved; because there always seem to be an element of defensiveness there. I don’t want to look at his because, and I don’t want o look at his because; the whole point is, it’s the finances of the country, it’s your tax money, it’s my tax money, it is the money we are paying for the country to be run. We want to know that it is being spent in the most efficient manner and what I will say if the government is doing those expenditures in the most efficient manner then that too is revealed by the committee. These numbers need to be examined because of they’re nation’s finances.”

Jose Sanchez

“The Prime Minister has already indicated that he will do everything in his power to have the PAC motion is struck down. What will the senator for business be doing to see that something is done that the PAC committee can work?”

Kay Menzies

“The senator for business is very committed to this topic. It is something that the PAC committee that he jumped on even immediately in serving this term. His predecessor Godwin Hulse was also dedicated to the issue of reform and particularly the PAC was one issue for him. I would hope that they could work together in this instance and try to convince the PM that it is in the best interest of your government, of the opposition and for the people of Belize to get this, maybe not his motion through but to get something done to get the PAC functional and moving again in the way that the nation needs it to move.”

Jose Sanchez

“The argument has been made by the PM that they won the elections so they should have the majority on the PAC itself. That’s just the way that democracy goes.”

Kay Menzies

“Well democracy also calls for accountability and that committee is about accountability most of all.”

When the house meets on Wednesday, we’ll know the future of the PAC amendment.
