Cop still faces serious charges in court for shooting Buckley

Richard “Dickie” Bradley

Much of the media attention over the past few years have focused on Buckley’s recovery and mounting medical bills, but little has been heard of Inspector Dennis Lopez. Lopez is the officer who is accused of shooting Buckley with a sixteen gauge shotgun to the face. According to Bradley, that is a separate criminal matter that will have no bearing on the settlement that Buckley is negotiating with the police department.

Richard “Dickie” Bradley, Attorney

“At the time he was charged, he was charged for Attempted Murder which under the crime control act; a person can’t get bail in the Magistrate’s Court. He was subsequently granted bail and he is out on bail. I made checks last month with the Supreme Court. The matter of the criminal side of this issue is in fact in Justice Gonzalez’s court and he says that he has it listed down for trial when the Supreme Court session reopens in September. That is a separate matter from what we are dealing with. There is a lot of confusion in Belize and I think the lawyers are not doing enough to educate our people. But if you remember America’s most famous racist case with OJ Simpson; he won his case when ninety-nien point nine percent of white people couldn’t believe that he could win and ninety-nine point nine percent of the black people in America knew that he ought to have won. Subsequently, he was then sued in the civil courts and was found liable for millions and millions of dollars for the death of Nicole Simpson. In the case of Mister Buckley, whnever you commit a crime, it is the police who investigate, it is the case who deal with giving justice, but that’s on the criminal side of the case. If somebody knock you down or knock down yo pickney and they charge ahn and ih go dah court; that is of no help to you when you are cripple for the rest of your life. So instead of filing in the civil courts and claiming five million dollars or two million dollars or whatever it is, the government has said we are not going to fight in the civil courts over this matter. What takes place in the criminal court is a different matter. The person who shot Mr. Buckley while they were doing police duties one night on the south side of Belize City is faced with a charge of Attempted Murder and I think also Dangerous Harm and other events. That is a separate matter.”

Sources close to News Five say that the proposed settlement is in the range of a high six-figure cash reward, which takes into consideration his young age and the number of years that he will be unable to work.
