P.U.P. withholds support from Norwegian Cruise Line

Francis Fonseca

Earlier in the newscast, we told you about the Luke Espat bid and Cordel Hyde’s possible return into the P.U.P.  The Party Leader, Francis Fonseca, also spoke about other pressing issues including the fifty million dollar tourism project for Harvest Caye. He says the Opposition does not support the cruise tourism project proposed by Norwegian Cruise Lines for southern Belize. According to Fonseca, the Opposition has not been made privy to the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding and neither has it been included in any aspect of the negotiations. Barring that, and the fact that there are serious concerns including the environmental impact of the project which Fonseca says have not been addressed, the P.U.P. is withholding all support.

Francis Fonseca, P.U.P. Leader

“The representatives from the south and myself have had many meetings to discuss this matter over the past few weeks and we have in fact met with representatives from NCL as well. We are not privy to the MOU. We have four elected representatives in the south and they have not seen the MOU; they have not been a part of that discussion. We have municipalities in the south—town councils and mayors who represent the south—they have not been privy to any of these discussions and deliberations. So the P.U.P. is not in any position to support any project in the south at this time. We have said, our representatives have said that in principle, they do not have a problem with cruise tourism in the south, but we have to see what is proposed. We are not prepared to give a blanket approval, a blanket support for a project in the south. We have to be a part of the discussion; we have to see the proposed MOU. Because our representatives have been meeting with their villagers, with their constituents and they have raised serious concerns. They are concerned about the environment, about their fresh water supply; they are concerned about the exclusivity that they are hearing about the contract; they are concerned about the sharing of the head tax—they are not sure how these communities will benefit from the head tax. And they are concerned about jobs, job creation. Will this project in fact mean that these communities in the south will benefit in a meaningful way from job creation.”

  1. Belizean says:

The questions he is asking at the end are simply to confuse the public, so as to garner support for himself. He knows the answers to the questions he put up. There is nothing that isnt answered. As a matter of fact, this project will do everyone good. This is a long term job creation project. If anyone cannot see that, they cannot see further than their own nose!

  3. Citizen says:

In the beginning the cruise line will create a few jobs, but in the long term only menial jobs like toilet cleaners, house keeping and maybe cooks. The object is to take the whole pie and even the crumbs too. We are supposed to be relegated to be worth nothing, as these companies suck us dry.
