P.U.P. Leader supports PACMAN’s move for reshuffling accounts committee

Francis Fonseca

Last week, the P.U.P. submitted a motion to be included on the order papers for this Wednesday’s sitting of the House. The motion proposed a change in the structure of the Public Accounts Committee to take away the majority enjoyed by government and allow for participation by the Senate. The motion is proposed by P.U.P. Cayo South representative, Julius Espat. But as soon as that became known, P.M. Barrow dismissed it as untenable. We also asked Fonseca about the motion, to which he responded that the P.U.P. is serious about real reform.

Francis Fonseca, P.U.P. Leader

“We understand that if we are going to make any meaningful changes in the way Belize is governed, we have to take deliberate actions to do that. And so this motion proposed to do just that; to enhance the capacity of the Publics Account Committee to carry out its work. To be a proper check and balance on the government of the day—whichever government that is. So it is not placing power in the hands of the opposition or placing power in the hands of the minority as the prime minister is suggesting. Man we are talking about a sharing of power, a sharing of power. So a shared power between government, the opposition and civil society, the churches, the unions…that is what we are talking about. And I think any reasonable Belizean who hears this motion and who has an opened mind and who is concerned about the way Belize is govern—whether under the P.U.P. or the U.D.P.—and who believes that we can do better; that there is an opportunity for us to do better with the people’s money and be more accountable for the people’s money…I think any reasonable Belizean would support this motion.”
