Forty-eight year old Guatemalan national and taxi-driver of Bullet Tree, Adolfo Ventura, perished in a traffic accident just after seven on Wednesday night. Ventura was traveling towards his home when, just a few distance from the lane to his house, he lost control of his grey Toyota taxi and careened off the road near this bridge. The vehicle came to a complete stop with all four wheels in the air and Ventura dead on impact.

“He cracked his skull, he broke his neck…his back was broken and they say that his legs were broken as well. And while they wanted to take him to the hospital, he was already dead. So they couldn’t do anything. When they told me, I was at church. So we left church and my brother took me to see the vehicle. We then went to the church. When we reached the hospital, he was already in the freezer in the morgue. We couldn’t do anything; just for us to see the body.”

Suselie Guerra, Sister-in-law, Accident Victim

“To me it looked like he was driving and I figure he must have dropped asleep and ih miss the bridge and ih run right ina the creek and the vehicle flip over with the four wheels in the air.”

The noise made by the impact caught the attention of Belizean painter, Jorge Landero, also of Bullet Tree Village. He went to Ventura’s rescue. The family was at church when they were told the tragic news.

Suselie Guerra

“They told me that he was drinking and they informed us when we came out of church because we went to the service last night and when we get home, one of my nephew came here and told us that he get ina accident. So immediately we get into the vehicle and gone see what was happening. When we reached to the hospital there, we just passed and see the vehicle and he was already at the hospital.”

Duane Moody

“Was he known to be someone that drinks and drives or does he speeds?”

Suselie Guerra

“Well actually drinks and drive no, but speeds, I woudla say yes. To me that is what caused his accident that night because that night he was drinking.”

According to Ventura’s Common-law-wife of ten years, Mirna Guerra, Ventura had only recently started working as a taxi-driver.

Mirna Guerra

“Not even a year was he driving as a taxi man. He had about six or seven months that he was a taxi-man. But actually he just started and then he had his accident. He flipped with the car and the four wheels were left in the air.”

The family says that they are in need of assistance to bury their loved one. Anyone who would like to assist can call cell phone number 663-7221 or 604-3842. Duane Moody for News Five.

These Taxi Associations need to Train, Educate and Review their members’ skills and capabilities on a quarterly basis. As it is now some taxi drivers are driving around town drunk, with poor attitudes, limited driving skills and lack of courtesy. All this with Taxi Association stickers printed across their vehicles. We must do better than this!
