2 Jaguars returning to USA on special invitation

Ian Gaynair

In a present society that is rife with moral decay the old proverb “honesty is the best policy” has all but lost its meaning.  So, when two members of the Belize National A Selection blew the whistle on a potential match fixer in Portland, prior to the Jaguars taking on the United States in round one of the Gold Cup competition, it was a noble act that didn‘t go unnoticed.  After all, midfielder Ian Gaynair and goalkeeper Woodrow West could have accepted a handsome bribe of ten thousand Euros each to throw game one.  Instead, the Jaguars went on to suffer a thorough defeat with a score of six to one, despite a valiant effort against the powerhouse team.  The point of that story for the duo is that it still pays to be morally upright.  Both Gaynair and West have been invited to Chicago as guests of UNCAF President, Rafael Tinoco, to attend the final match of the tournament in recognition of their act of valor.  News Five spoke with Ian Gaynair who told us what the personal invitation means to him.

Ian Gaynair, Midfielder, Belize Jaguars

“Well I get di understanding from the president Mister Vicente that he get an email from UNCAF stating that they want invite me and Woodrow West to go out there to Chicago to have a dinner with the president of UNCAF and attend the final game due to weh with the match-fixing thing that we come out and neva take the bribery.”

“Do you believe in this instance that your honesty has paid off in terms of coming forward and revealing the truth about what was taking place between you guys and the match-fixer?”

Rafael Tinoco

“Yeah, the thing is with me, I don’t really just live my life for today. I live my life for tomorrow. So nobody can’t just come and bribe me so easily fi mek I just fall fi it. it look like ina life when yo honest, good things always come to yo afterwards.”

Isani Cayetano

“What’s the feeling of being invited by the president of this esteemed organization; to actually sit down with him, have dinner and actually view together the final game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup Tournament?”

Ian Gaynair

“Well I think it is something really nice…it is something weh dah like any footballer woulda want that opportunity there. So I feel very good about the opportunity that me and Woodrow have wah dinner with the president and could deh out there to even watch di final match.”

I am so proud of Ian Gaynair, Woodrow West and the whole foot ball team on their performance in the Gold Cup competition. Much respect in not falling for the bribe, as you made Belize proud. In analyzing the game, I do not blame you guys for the 5 – 1 loss against the USA. The coach deliberately set up the team in a formation you guys are not used to. The lost was inevitable! Then the coach corrected the formation when you played against Costs Rica, which we all know could have been a draw. Even USA only beat Costa Rica 1 nil, which prove that the way you set up the team is important. The loss against Cuba falls flat at the foot of the coach again. How can you play new inexperience players and set up the team in a formation they are not used to, if you wanted to win? Even tourist board owe you guys, because you advertise Belize to the world. We hold no loss against you! CONGRATULATIONS!!!

This is what I am talking about. A slow five cent is better than a hasty one, is a saying my grandmother raised up saying. She always told us your good name is better than anything that you get wrong. More of our young people need to learn from what these two young men have done.

I pray that some team may make them an offer and give them the opportunity to play on the national field. Today I am proud of these young men.

Congratulations are in order for the Belize jaguars soccer team. They represent Belize in a commendable manner. Regardless they did not win any game, they should be proud of themselves for performing at such at a high level. Experience will make them a better team. It takes time. Just hang in there!!!

Honesty is key in life. What these guys did was a good move and although they didn’t win and were still bribed anyway they could have easily take that money, but they didn’t which makes me proud of them and now they are being awarded for their honesty so everyone can see that our players from Belize are honest :)

Proud of the entire team, although I know for a fact that they are capable of doing much better than they did. But, we aren’t all perfectionists right? We’ll get them next time, hopefully by God’s will.

~ just my 2 cents here
