Second pair of siblings missing in the south

Jairo & Fanny Romero

A second pair of siblings is missing from the south. The Rash children went missing in August 2010 and they were never found. Tonight Independence Police are on the lookout for two children who have been reported missing by their parents. Jairo and Fanny Romero disappeared from the small village of Cowpen in the Stann Creek district early last week and since then their immediately family has had no contact with them. It is believed that the children are in the company of their maternal grandfather, and police are seeking him as the main person of interest in the matter. The Police are still trying to gather as much information as they can on the missing siblings.

Today, Independence Police are taking statements from the family of Jairo and Fanny Romero, two children who disappeared from their home village of Cowpen last week. The matter was not reported to Police until Saturday morning, so the department is still in the early stages of gathering information. The father of the children, Felix Romero, works in San Pedro while Fanny and Jairo live with their mother. Romero told us that early Wednesday morning the children were taken from the village by a strange woman.

“They were walking form a neighbor whose name was Vilma. They were going home two blocks away then an unknown woman took them away from the village to an undisclosed location.”

And that’s where the case gets a little complicated, because as it turns out the children were then taken to the village of Silk Grass to an uncle’s house, and were then seen in the company of their grandfather, Juan Jovel, who left to take Fanny to the Dangriga hospital after she complained about an infection from her earring.

Felix Romero

“They arrived in Silk Grass with their grandfather. On Thursday at ten a.m. they went to the hospital because the little girl was suffering from infection of her ear. They took her to the clinic in Dangriga. They did not return to Silk Grass nor to their home. So we don’t know what happened to them.”

Police told us today that their early investigations have revealed that on Thursday the children were seen in the company of their grandfather in the village of Cowpen, but since then there have been no sightings of any of them. It is reported that the children are very close to him, so it is not believed at this time that they are in any danger. But still, Felix Romero is begging the public’s help in locating his children.

“We have informed all of our friends and people of Belize through this medium to be on the lookout for these kids. It is very dangerous for them to walk in unknown places. And if they see them, please inform the authorities. We have posted pictures of them on various TV stations.”

The emotional father also took the time to send a personal message to Jairo and Fanny.

Felix Romero

“(Crying) Children, if you are watching this on TV right now, please come home. We are devastated and anxious to find you safely. Remember that we are your parents and you cannot be walking by yourselves in unknown places. Please come back to us or report your whereabouts to police so that they can bring you back home to Cowpen.”

Fanny is nine years old and Jairo is eight. Police are currently issuing photos of the children and their grandfather countrywide to aid in their detection. Mike Rudon for News Five.
