Cop acquitted of manslaughter

Lazaro Catch

Today, the second policeman alleged to be involved in the shooting death of O’Neil Anthony Jones in February 2010 walked out of the Supreme Court a free man. PC Lazaro Catch was charged with Abetment to Murder after a Jamaican national identified as O’Neil Anthony Jones was shot in the back and killed as he rode down a Lord’s Bank Street on his bicycle. PC Lazaro Catch and PC Jorge Lemus were called to the scene of a disturbance at Ruby’s Bar in Lord’s Bank on February thirteen, 2010. Jones, identified as the man who caused the disturbance, was killed by a bullet to the back, and the main witness told the court that she heard a slim policeman tell a fat policeman to shoot.

Jorge Lemus

But in court Catch’s attorney Darrell Bradley made a no case submission, telling the court that at no time was any identification of the shooter established. He further argued that the witness, Lavern Stevens, did not provide any proof that the man she saw riding away was the same man who was killed by Police. Justice Troadio Gonzalez accepted that submission and directed the jury to find Catch not guilty of abetment to manslaughter.Earlier in the year PC Jorge Lemus was acquitted of the charge of manslaughter in the same shooting, also because the witness, Lavern Stevens, failed to link them to the crime, referring only to a slim policeman and a fat policeman.

Why did the prosecution even wasted time in proceeding to trial with this matter. They could have seen that the case against this accused was even weaker cause he was charged with abetting Lemus who had been found not guilty earlier this year. It was a waste of time on the part of the DPP office.

Dat da the trouble in Belize is that people forget too fast and the corupt live to do the crimes another day.
