Uh oh; Boledo machine giving problems

Lewin Samuels

The thirtieth weekly drawing of the Sunday Lottery Draw was an unusual one, as in the middle of the drawing there was a malfunction of the automated lottery and jackpot machine.  Introduced earlier this year, the machine had no hiccups during the first prize, twenty-one-fifty-eight, but the third digit of the second prize was skipped in the usual eight-second interval and the fourth digit came up instead, reading seventy-nine-space-one.  After some consultation between prize-draw supervisors Anna Bennett Jorgenson and Dawna Ayuso with Secretary to the Lotteries Committee Lewin Samuels, the third digit was drawn manually, making the prize seventy-nine-sixty-one. The third prize saw a similar problem and that winning number was eighty-nine-forty-eight, the four being drawn manually.  The selection did not go down well with the dozen or so regular buyers who witnessed the draw live outside the judicial building in downtown Belize City, a group which eventually swelled to about fifty.  But Lotteries Committee Secretary Samuels, who personally came to see the rest of the draw, spoke with the media at its conclusion and explained what transpired.

“What was explained to me as I was not here in the first instance is that the machine had a malfunction when selecting the second prize, the third digit of the second prize.”

Reporter

“So for those listening on the radio, it was seven, nine, the third digit was not picked and then one?”

Lewin Samuels

“Right. So because this machine can operate electronically and manually, then we had to pick the third digit manually.”

Reporter

And the number selected was six?”

Lewin Samuels

“There was not a number that was selected before and then it was denied. No. There was no number selected art that point so six was the number that was selected manually which was transparent to all the witnesses that were out here.”

Reporter

“And then the third prize which is eighty-nine forty-eight went…”

Lewin Samuels

“The four again malfunctioned electronically so we had to pick it manually. It is all a part of the machine. It can operate both electronically and manually.”

Reporter

“But the numbers were selected properly without any suggestion of rigging?”

Lewin Samuels

“Properly, no rigging.”

Reporter

“Okay, how soon can you get a technician to deal with the machine because you have boledo and stuff to pick tomorrow?”

Lewin Samuels

“Well I would have to check. That machine does not play the boledo. We have a separate machine that plays the boledo here. So, Monday morning we can look at that.”

Samuels says he will oversee the process to correct the problem.
