Olympian Kaina Martinez holds a camp for Seine Bight kids

Garel is providing inspiration to many youths to show them that anyone can achieve as long as they make the effort. That is also the same spirit that Belizean Olympian, Kaina Martinez is instilling in the youths of Seine Bight Village in Stann Creek. Martinez, who is also a member of the Belize Coast Guard, hosted a summer camp over the weekend. News Five spoke to the role model who said that over one hundred and fifty kids attended the camp.

“I wanted to share what I loved with others and giving others what I have to teach them in sports. I’m not looking at it as just sports, I’m looking at it as a catalyst for youths to follow their dreams, to do stuff that they will want to do—to help them instill discipline and to gain motivation, to be self-motivated and different stuff like that.”

“So what was the event that you had over the weekend and where did it take place?”

Voice of: Kaina Martinez

“It took place in my community. I first wanted to start in my community. To share with the kids being the fact that a lot of kids in my community look at me as a role model. I personally believe that putting them in a place where they can express themselves would allow them to see a bigger picture than just Kaina Martinez. I don’t want them to just look at Kaina Martinez, but to look at themselves as an individual and to know that they can do the stuff that Kaina Martinez has done.”

“What different activities took place at your camp?”

Voice of: Kaina Martinez

“It started from age four to fifteen. And I have events like thirty meters, forty meters, softball throw, standing jump which is like the base of a long jump—we don’t really have a pitch so I just do that so that they could have an idea what long jump is like. And as the day goes by, I motivate different kids and give them a picture; that if they become a part of something, if they had the courage to be a part of something, it doesn’t mean you have to come in first. You don’t have to come first and second…that was my main thing…sharing with the kids.”

Martinez says the camp will continue to be an annual summer event.

  1. Firebrand says:

I watched this young lady perform in the Olympics and I was very proud of her then. Now, I am extremely proud of her and what she is doing. I think the entire nation should get behind her and maybe we can start the camp that so many so-called developed nations have in place for their children. We should contact her and donate, volunteer, or do whatever is necessary. But let’s keep it pure (too much hand spoil the pot). Great work Sis Kaina from the Firebrand.
