Rowan Garel and Kaina Martinez are two outstanding Belizeans that are motivating youths. The Global Parish Project, sponsored by the Central American Regional Security Initiative, is also honing the skills of youths. Later in the week, the Global Parish Project in conjunction with the University of West Indies will be hosting a public poetry open mic session. News Five spoke to the executive director of the Global Parish Project who says that there are other activities that youths can learn about simply by going to their office on North Front Street.

Arthur Usher, Executive Director, Global Parish Project

“This Thursday, we are having a collaboration. It is a poetry collaboration; it’s a poetry explosion. It is a collaboration with the University of the West Indies. It is basically an opportunity for any poet, any person in the creative arts to come out and showcase their skills. It’s an open mic so that means that there is no set order in the way that we do the show. It’s just designed for poets and artists and those who love the art to come out and showcase and to also enjoy a night of poetry.”

“Yeah, we do have our youth voices program which deals directly with all our poets and artists. I know some people have been looking at the Channel Five program where you have Denzel and Saga who are vying for ten thousand dollars. So they will be there as well. We also have other poets like K-Yo and Priscilla. We have a range of young people from age fifteen and up who will be out there showcasing their poems as well as the poets from UWI, who they will be inviting. So anyone can come out; it is a free show. It is from six to nine on Thursday at the UWI auditorium.”

“For people who would like to be more involved with the work of Global Parish, how could they get in contact with you? And what other programs you have ongoing?”

Arthur Usher

“Well they can always come at our office. We are at twenty-nine North Front Street, just upstairs of the Waver Pharmacy. They can come and see me at any time between nine and four. They can also contact us on our website, the and during the week they can come to the office, speak to us and get involved. The youth voices program is geared towards young people mainly. We have meetings right now from two to five on Friday’s. During the school time, we change that time to Saturday at the same time. But Global Parish on a whole in terms of dealing with documentary films on Belize; that’s what we do—that’s an ongoing project and our main program so they are invited to come and bring ideas, bring concepts.”
