Weekend sporting highlights with James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

If you thought5 the bitter rivalry between Belize Telemedia and Fresca Lady Rebels couldn’t get any hotter, well you’re wrong because Friday evening, at Roger’s Stadium, saw the teams pull up to a tie in the 5 game Belize City Softball championship. We pick up the action in the bottom of the second. Mary Flowers with 2 outs and Carla Robinson at 2nd base when she serves up this hit to Doreth Young who brings home Robinson for the 1st run of the ballgame. Josephine Flowers then comes to bat of Lady Rebels and picks up this hit to put runners at 2nd and 3rd base. It’s a short day for Mary Flowers after loading the bases with this walk to Clarencia Jones and she’s pulled out of the match.

In comes Kenisha Sutherland as replacement with the bases loaded to face the always dangerous Sharrette Vernon who safely raises this ball past the infield. Doreth Young comes in to score while Josephine Flowers is tagged trying to reach home for the 2-nil Fresca lead. Patricia Thimbrel comes up against Sutherland in the 3rd and smacks this ball past the infield. Lisa Jones at 2nd base rounds 3rd looking to go home—changes her mind and then heads hime to beat the tag and make it a 3-zip ballgame. In the top of the 5th, Lydia Cacho faces Lanisha Jones with 1 on and her hit brings Kyla McFadzean home for the 2nd Telemedia run. Telemedia strikes again in the 6th when the catcher fails to corral this pitch from Jones which allows Norecia Frazier to score from 3rd and we’ve got a 3-all tie. In the bottom of the inning, Sharrette Vernon, hits this ball to the shortstop with runners at 1st and 3rd. The throw to home is low and Doreth Young makes it a 4-3 ballgame. Ashanti Anderson comes up with this fly ball that is caught but the throw to home plate is not a good one as Clarencia Jones makes it a 5-3 Lady Rebels lead.

In the top of the 7th, Earlene Belisle hits to 2nd base and is out but Lydia Cacho scores easily from 3rd to make it a 5-4. It’s now Lenisha Jones against Mary Flowers. Jones gets Flowers to pop up and Doreth Young makes the catch. As Fresca Lady Rebels take the 5-4 win to tie the championship series at 2 apiece. The decisive game 5 is set for Friday inside Rogers Stadium.

In ewns from the Belize Rural Softball Tournament, yesterday Lord’s Bank Sunrise walloped Arrows Reloaded 10 to 1, Easy Does It blanked Ladyville Rising Stars 7-zip, Village Gyal handled St. Paul’s by that same score and UB Jaguars bombed Buttercup 16 to 1.

Turning to the volleyball championships, currently in session. Lady Jaguars survived against Moen Stars 23-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-18 and 15-8 in female play. In interoffice place, B.T.L. beast Belize Bank 25-13, 20-25, 19-17 in straight sets while in the male nightcap, Jaguars needed 5 sets to edge Scorpions: 12-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-19 and 15-12.

In football news, we caught up with the Atlantic Bank Female Inter-district Competition at the F.F.B. Stadium yesterday as Dangriga Pumas challenged triple B. Early in the ballgame, Shayanna Caliz gets this chance to open the scoreboard for the Pumas but shoots straight into the arms of the goalkeeper. At the other end, Patriciana Marin is striped by Noemi Magana, the bal reaches Iris Centeno whose left foot launch fives triple a 1-nil lead. Kaya Cattouse then comes up with the dteal ands eh fires from outside the 18 to beat Shereen Vasquez for the 2-zip lead. Dangriga Pumas look to pull one back when Nykemah Kuylen misses from pointblank range. Still in 1st half play Iris Centeno attacks left side to fire at goal—Shereen Vasquez should have hadled instead it’s a 3-zip lead for Triple B.

We go to 2nd half as Shirley Codd fires this set piece which is mishandled by the keeper. Noemi Magana gets the rebound but fails to capitalize. Again Kuylen gets a chance to get Puma’s on the scoreboard and again she comes up empty. Make it a 4-nil victory for Triple B when Kaya Cattouse works her way through the defense to score her 2nd goal of the match.

Meanwhile folks, our national team might be at home right now, but the CONCACAF Gold Cup still goes on. Yesterday, the united States got to the semifinals by punishing El Salvador in a 5-1 final score. Honduras also advanced with a 1-nil scorcher over Costa Rica. On Saturday, Mexico burned Trinidad and Tobago 1-nil while Panama blasted Cuba in a 6-1 affair. Thus on July 24th, at Dallas, the US will face Honduras in game and in the night time, Panama going up against Mexico.

Jah overall, I’m James Adderley.
