Minister of National Security says proper investigations will be done

John Saldivar

The third case occurred on May tenth when Punta Gorda resident, Rasheed Elijio was shot and killed by Police as he allegedly attempted to escape custody. That officer-involved shooting and two others are among the files which were sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice. Last week, Cheryl-Lynn Vidal responded in scathing fashion, criticizing the Police both during the incident and during the investigations. She returned the files to the Commissioner of Police as incomplete, urging him to personally further the investigations. Today, Minister of National Security John Saldivar was asked about that matter and says he agrees with the D.P.P. and that proper investigations will be done.

“I imagine that all that needs to be done now is for police to complete the investigation. So whatever it is the D.P.P. has said is deficient in the files, the investigators will have to return to do that work.”

“Sir the three cases include police killings or are about police killings and what the D.P.P. is saying is that she wasn’t to see the commissioner use his offices to ensure that the police are doing their job—not only because it is about them.”

Voice of: John Saldivar

“Yes and I agree with the D.P.P. that they need to do a full and thorough investigation and justice must be done. And so if the D.P.P. has directed that she needs more information, more investigation, it will be done.”

Another officer-involved shooting under investigation is for Kevin ‘Boco T’ Kelly who died at the hands of Police while in a holding cell in San Pedro. In all four cases, families are waiting for answers from the department.
