Do you frequently have the urge to pee? Are you experiencing pain when you pee? Maybe you have unexplained lower back pain? A fever? Nausea? Any of these symptoms can be an indication of a very common infection. The urinary tract infection or UTI is a very common infection affecting the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of your body, the bladder or the kidney. How do you know if you have a UTI? There are two types of UTI’s with distinctly different symptoms.

Dr. Jorge Hidalgo, Internal Specialist

“One that is upper and that means that it’s affecting the kidneys then we call it pyelonephritis. In those cases, the patient will experience fever, nausea, vomiting, sometimes they can experience pain in the side or in the lower back and that is essentially pyelonephritis we don’t have any lower urinary track symptoms. The lower track infection symptoms is actually we experience like urgency to use the bathroom or pain when you want to urinate frequency we can see changes in the color of the urine. Smell the urine and in some cases –when we call it cystisis – patients can describe that they are passing blood in the urine…affects the bladder and the urethra.”

While, men women and children are all susceptible to developing this infection. Women – based on anatomy alone – are most vulnerable. Similarly people with underlying conditions like diabetes are also more vulnerable.

“There are many risk factors one we can say that…it’s different in childhood and in newborn…we can see babies having a urinary tract infection very repetitive…see the pediatrician..no anatomically…in the adult life we can see women have more tendency…anatomy…predisposition for the bacteria…urethra is shorter…develop an infection.”

The majority of cases of UTI’s are not serious, but some infections can lead to serious problems.

Dr. Jorge Hidalgo

“In the case of a pyelonephritis, a severe infection that is affecting the kidneys itself eventually scarred tissues can develop on the kidneys itself…in the future with hypertension and can end also with a permanent kidney damage…also can be so bad… end up with losing a kidney..like patient with diabetes. It is very important for people with symptoms to go to your doctor and ask about doing a urine analysis but also along with it…we will

also do a urinary culture that….antibiotics that we can use safely. Usually an antibiotics course is for seven days; we use less than seven days cause….I don’t want to complete the antibiotic because I feel better…will develop resistance to this particular antibiotic and it’s not going to work and so we will need to use something else.”

Once you experience symptoms it’s a good idea to check in with your doctor because waiting too long to see the doctor can cause more complications. Dr Hidalgo’s main advice to avoid UTI’s is to stay hydrated – drink lots of fluids and do not hold in your urine – use the bathroom as you feel the urge.
