USAID gives cash stimulus to BDARRT, a disaster management group

A U.S. thirty thousand dollar agreement was signed today in Belmopan to provide support training to the Belize Disaster and Rescue Response, BDARRT. A team of volunteers will benefit from the training to strengthen their capacity to provide efficient services in times of disasters. The agreement was signed between the United States Agency for International Development’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance and BDARRT. News Five’s Jose Sanchez reports

The Belize Disaster Rescue Response Team BDARRT is at the forefront of every natural disaster. The harder the situation is to manage, the greater the possibility that BDARRT will take charge of the situation.

“In times of national emergencies many of the other agencies could not get beyond a certain point. Now we at BDARRT are the one that goes the extra mile into depth of those areas. Water part we do the swift water level awareness for the NEMO students. The bigger picture we do evacuation we relocate patients we stabilize them we evacuate; all those stuff, medical.”

Today, USAID has given a grant to BDARRT to assist in training members of the District Emergency Management Organization (DEMO).

“USAID/OFDA is greatly pleased to award this new small grant for a total estimate of in US Dollars 30,000 to the Belize Disaster and Rescue Responses Team. This program wills serve seventy-five volunteers with necessary trainings needed. This training will enable the Belize Disaster and Rescue Responses Team and NEMO to conduct necessary improvements and adjustments to their plan of action at every disaster preparedness level, to have trained rescue response teams on call at all times and to be better prepared in an institution to deal with and respond to any disaster. In order to provide rapid, prompt and efficient rescue services.”

“One of my American colleagues here at the embassy actually spent a couple of years as a volunteer in the BDARRT and I have heard stories about the important work that the volunteers did getting medical supplies to isolated villages during the 2008 Belize River flood. The 30,000 Belize dollar grant instructors from BDARRT in conjunction with District Emergency Management Organization, district coordinators will conduct a series of trainings with monitoring and devaluation and will continue to education of the DEMO response team.”

Wendy Garcia

“BDARRT is located at Retail Village that’s on the Hummingbird Highway a little past the Blue Hole. Basically what we are doing is we train for the National Emergency Management Organization. Basically we show search and rescuers how to perform a rescue in the event somebody needs rescuing. We also run different levels of training in the swift water rescue due to the lot of flood environment we usually have here. That is why we do our training annually to keep our members to the standard that is required. Everything goes back to training, the more you train the better you respond in time everything runs more efficiently.”

Loyda Martinez

Loyda Martinez, Executive Director, BDARRT

“We can never be well prepared for disaster but we can always try our best. Just know that the volunteers from BDARRT and NEMO are readily prepared to make this project a success. You guys are always welcome to come and see the progress of the project.”
