No Justice for Stephen Buckley

Three years ago, Stephen Buckley was shot by the police paralyzing the left side of his body and unable to work. Buckley was promised assistance by the department, but that never materialized and these days, Buckley has been reduced to hustling on the street to take care of his family. There is little to come by and Buckley’s woes are complicated by a pending bill of thousands of dollars from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Duane Moody caught up with Buckley at a location in downtown Belize City where he now spends his days.

Steven Buckley, Shot by Police

“I got wah bottle right yah di sit down di try do wah lee hustle fu survive fi try feed mi kids them because it noh di happen fi me. And I want the Commissioner of Police and the police weh shot me fi make dehn come see me and help me.”

Duane Moody, Reporting

This is Steven Buckley… he is regularly stationed here on the sidewalk in front of Augusto Quan in downtown Albert Street hustling and begging for a dollar. Once an avid mason, the forty year old is now medically unfit to work following a horrific ordeal which occurred back on the night of April twenty-eight 2010. According to our records, Buckley was shot twice to the head by Inspector Denis Lopez. The incident left Buckley partially paralyzed and unable to work to support his family. The then Commissioner of Police, Crispin Jeffries, said that police would assist Buckley with his medical expenses. But that help has not been forthcoming.

“The police man dehn mi say dehn mi wah pay off the hospital bill, but I still noh know weh happen because dehn noh pay off the bill or nothing.”

And in mid-June, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital notified Buckley of an outstanding balance of six thousand, five hundred and sixty-one dollars owed to the hospital for his medical treatment following his near death experience. Buckley was given a deadline to pay or legal action would be taken against him.

Steven Buckley

“Killer Heusner send mi a bill for sixty-odd thousands and if I noh pay in a certain time dehn wah ker mi dah court. And di bill come again for the same amount a money again. So I wah see the commissioner of police to come talk to me.”

Duane Moody

“When is the deadline?”

“Sometime ina this week right yah. Sometime bout like next week I would say.”

Duane Moody

“So what are you going to do if you can’t find that money? If the police department is not going to tell you anything?”

Steven Buckley

“Well I noh know what to do. I have to just sit down and make that go like that cause I can’t do nothing to it.”

Buckley also claims that he is not getting any justice. He says the case against the officer who pulled the trigger is going nowhere.

Steven Buckley

“Whenever I goh dah the case, dah lone adjourn, adjourn, adjourn. I noh know dah weh happen. I need help.  If I neva need help, I neva mi wah deh out yah di beg.”

Duane Moody

“What are your lawyers saying?”

Steven Buckley

“Well mi lawyers noh di come to me and talk to me or tell me nothing. But right now dah Dickie Bradley I got di help mi out.  I noh know weh wah happen, but I need help. So I need somebody fi help me out because I need to take care of my kids them. This dah weh dehn wah want me do for the rest of my life? Di beg? I noh need fi di beg nobody or thing. I need help.”

This pm and gov have no shame they kill babies they shoot an innocent man in the face then they don’t take care of him this goes to show you that his pm thinks he is beyond the reach of justice but he is not and when the belizean people finally wake up and kick all of these corrupt individuals out and put them all in jail believe this day will come so let it be said so let it be written.

  2. CRCN-BLZEAN says:

its not that they don’t have any shame they don’t have any mind and compassion for Belizeans who put them where they are. they nearly kill this Belizean and find it hard to even pay the man medical bills but when they kill the damn Guatemalan he that was here illegal and damaging things they were quick to pay the family compensation. now when the born Belizean people need help and are well deserving of this financial help they are not so willing to come up with a big cheque. we should take away they Belizean citizenship and evict them from the country because they are all for the Guatemalans and Mexicans and who ever else but not the Belizeans.
