Woodrow West will be the goal keeper in Costa Rica game

Team Belize Coach Ian Mork has announced that he will start Woodrow West in goal against Costa Rica, but his decision to play Shane Orio in goal in the first round matchup between Belize and the USA has still been the subject of much criticism, most of it on Facebook to be factual. The criticism is that Woodrow West should have been started instead of Orio, or at least should have substituted for Orio in the second half. In fact, the Facebook sideline coaches and commentators have even come up with a budding rivalry between West and Orio. But is there any substance to all the talk? News Five’s William Neal is in Salt Lake City, Utah with the Jaguars and put that question to Woodrow West.

Woodrow West, Goalkeeper, Belize Jaguars

“For myself, personally, I’ve always been training hard. Being in Belize, I always keep my mind focused on those minor games in Belize. I always try to give my all and like a day like today, I focused on what I need to do and try to keep my body calm and see how I could help the team. Everybody needs to do that because it showed in the game with U.S.A.—the guys were not focused and mentally-wise, they were not there. On the field, you need to just prove yourself and give your all for your country. And these are the things that boost you in your mind knowing that you are playing for your country and all of your friends and family is watching you. So that’s the way I am prepared right now. Shane is a very good goalkeeper and I am a very good goalkeeper. So whatever the coaches decide to do, we are always ready and when I get my break, then I am ready to do that as well.”

“Let’s talk a little bit about the relationship between you and Shane. Obviously he has more experience and you talk about the skill-set that you too are equally matched. How do you use the experience and the relationship with Shane to better your own performance?”

Woodrow West

“Exactly. I work with Shane for quite a while, for five years—from before Shane even went to play his international teams in Costa Rica. He is a very good player and a very good friend in the goalkeeper world. He teaches me a lot and when he come back he always update me to new workouts and training and that’s one of the ways that I get better. I am a workout athlete player, but knowing the differences outside, Shane bring that back to me and I work on it and try to adjust myself. He is one of the players that help me and get me where I am physically and mentally-wise for the games.”

William Neal

“Obviously, you are aware of some of the things that have been said on Facebook…trying to develop a kind of rivalry between you and Shane. How do you respond to people when they come with those comments?”

Woodrow West

“On my Facebook, I don’t answer to nobody when it comes to those kinds of talking. But on the fans’ world that is their job. I have my own fans, Shane has his own fans, but personally between me and Shane that doesn’t cause any kind of rivalry. We laugh about it together and we know that he supports me and I support him a lot. So like I said, the best part of our national team is that we have two good goalkeepers and whatever time the coach ask anyone of us to go in, then we are always ready and that’s the way to keep things here in the Gold Cup.”

William Neal

“So what do you want to say to the fans as you take the field tomorrow? What do you want them to think about?”

Woodrow West

“Just continue support us. It really plays a big role. Me personally knowing that everybody is behind the team and believes in everyone of us, it gives me a high boost to go out there and give my all. And like I said, I will always give my best and I will try my best to keep the goal empty as much as possible because that is the only way that we could move forward and get the team in the second round.”
