Former Jaguars Coach Sherrier gives the lowdown

But a former Jaguars Head Coach disagrees with the president’s beliefs about future performance. Leroy Sherrier Lewis was responsible for taking the Jaguars through the Copa Centro Americana games in Costa Rica that solidified Belize’s spot in the Gold Cup. Held in the earlier part of this year, the qualifying tournament placed Belize on the map for its strong defense. But following Belize’s defeat on Tuesday, the former head coach has been very critical of the game and has shared his views on possible reasons for the performance by the Belize Jaguars. In an interview with a reporter from the Costa Rica Press, Sherrier Lewis said that Belize can easily be beat by Costa Rica at this Saturday’s game in Sandy City, Utah.

Leroy Sherrier Lewis was coaching the Belize National Selection for a year and he knows very well the team that Costa Rica will be playing this Saturday. Sherrier Lewis says that the team is very different from the one that won the qualifying game for the Gold Cup and this is why it is not going to be difficult for the Costa Rican team to advance.

Leroy Sherrier

“Costa Rica will not have any problem to win. Belize is mentally and demoralized; physically they were not playing well in the second half of the game.”

Leroy says that he is no longer in front of the Belize team because the football federation of Belize had little resources to work with. He assured that the team from Costa Rica showed an improvement in its performance in the Gold Cup and in the eliminations.

“Costa Rica initially did not show its hand, but little by little it is showing improvement and I am sure that when the tournament is finished, Costa Rica will be a balanced team in offensive and defensive play.”

Costa Rica will be playing Belize on Saturday at four-thirty at the Rio Tinto Stadium in Utah.

  1. Paco Smith says:

Although I give credence to the fact that Mr. Sherrier-Lewis is well acquainted with the Belize National Selection, we must not overlook two, critical elements which very well could influence his position on the matter.

#1 The former National Team Coach has a grievance with the FFB. I am in no position to comment on whether or not it is justified, but the fact remains is that he is not happy with them. #2 I stand to be corrected, but isn’t he Costa Rican? If that is so, maybe….just maybe his comments are steeped in some degree of nationalist sentiment. After all, I would love to see Team Belize beat any team they face, even if I was formerly associated with the said team.

In any event, this is a golden opportunity for the Belize’s National Team to step-up and show what they’re made of. Just imagine how sweet it would be for our guys to beat Costa Rica, given the sentiments expressed by former Coach Sherrir-Lewis?

This is where Team Belize can truly make a name for Belizean football.

    Go Jaguars!
