Galen University Basketball fundraiser for FFB and Jaguars

Monica Chun

This Friday, Galen University is staging a basketball game at the Bird’s Isle in Belize City. The event is to raise funds to further assist the Belize Jaguars and by extension the Football Federation of Belize with the necessary financing for the national teams that represent the Jewel in local and international outings. In collaboration with the Belize Basketball Federation, an all star team will take on the newly signed Galen Eagles Basketball team and it is expected to be a night of excellent sportsmanship.

Monica Chun, Director, Student Affairs, Galen University

“We’ve taken it upon ourselves just as every other Belizean has in coming up with a fundraiser for—and of course utilizing what we have at Galen University—through our new Galen Eagles Basketball Team that we just had sign on yesterday. So the idea is that we will be having a basketball game. It will be the Galen Eagles Basketball Team versus an All-Star Selection being put together in conjunction with Mister Paul Thompson from the Belize Basketball Federation. So it is a fun-filled event that we are planning and we hope that we could get the support from all Belizeans to come out to this event.”

“You can come out and see some young talent. We just brought on some kids from high school that actually went to the King James Classic. Names like: Linsley Lopez, Rodrick Williams, Akeem Walters…some young kids who will be joined up with some senior players. We have the captain, Jarrel Velasquez, Farrell Lauriano, Travis Lennon and so forth. These are some young kids doing something great for Belize; using basketball to give back to the football team noh.”

“We have entertainment during half time by our Galen Eagles Band being supported by Blue Steel Sounds. And as well as one of your contestants from Superstar, Miss Shanelly Sutherland, one of our Galen Eagles students and one of our students our band along with Mister Chad who will be there. And we have many giveaways for the evening. And of course, you can’t miss a game like this.”

The game starts at seven-thirty, but gates will be open from six-thirty. Admission is only ten dollars. For fans and supporters from the west that willing to attend the game, a bus will leave San Ignacio at four p.m. on Saturday and will stop at the Galen Compound in Central Farm and then in Belmopan before making its way to the Bird’s Isle in Belize City. A fee of five dollars round trip will be charged…these funds will also be given to the F.F.B.
