Match-fixer identified and has been in Belize before

Ruperto Vicente

But leading up to tonight’s world’s stage, there were some trials and tests for our boys. Over the weekend, Midfielder, Ian Gaynair, and Goalkeeper, Woodrow West, were offered thousands of Euros to fix the game so that Belize loses to the United States. Since then, CONCACAF has boosted security at the hotel and Interpol has been notified. And the news tonight is that the man has been identified by the President of the Football Federation of Belize, Ruperto Vicente. The match-fixer, who first approached the players during a friendly in Guatemala, has been operating in Belize for years now. Vicente says that there is evidence that he has tried to infiltrate Belizean football.

Ruperto Vicente, President, F.F.B.

“Well I have spoken to CONCACAF officials. We met this morning and they have assured me that there is extra security here at the hotel and the person who attempted to bribe our players has been identified and I know the person as well. I know that individual when they showed me the picture this morning, I realized that this person has been operating in Belize over a number of years. So he is not new to Belizean football. He is someone who has been there, but he has never made any contact with me. But I have known him for some time. But he has never approached me as the president of the football federation. So CONCACAF is very much concerned, but they are more concerned about the players being comfortable because I know the players were kinda frightened by it and so CONCACAF is very much concerned about the players welfare and how this will affect them and their performance on the field.”

“Now the person identified—just to revisit that for a moment—when you say he has been in Belize, has he just been there on a few visits or is he someone who has been trying to infiltrate Belize football?”

Ruperto Vicente

“I am not sure if he had tried to infiltrate Belizean football, but I don’t want to be quoted as yes he has, but there is enough evidence to show that he has been trying to infiltrate Belizean football.”

“And he is there on a regular basis as a visitor or is it someone that has taken up residence in Belize?”

Ruperto Vicente

“No, no, he had only come to Belize as a visitor. So he has been there before. Even when I was a referee, I had come in contact with this person.”
